“Luxury is a relative term”

La Via Laktea

I have been visiting Tulum for the past 6 years and am always eager to try new places. A friend recommended La Via Laktea so I booked a trip. I tried to book direct with the owner but did not hear back so I went though Loco Gringo. The rates seemed a bit steep, but I also took into account that it was a busy time of year. We arrived and our room was clean, comfortable and as described. La Via Laktea's sign says Luxury Cabana's and by Tulum standards, they are. It is important to know that power is limited in this area. Expect to have lights and ceiling fan ONLY between 5 and 10pm daily. If you are staying for more than 4+ days, I'd recommend pulling your linens off the bed if you want to have them changed. I am all for being green and conserving energy, but the heat and humidity can make things a bit funky. After three nights or so, it's nice to have fresh sheets and towels. During our stay, we had the unfortunate experience of the maid being sick/injured. Because of this our room was not cleaned for over 2 full days. Ok, I understand that life happens. What I did not understand was the second full day of not having our room cleaned, we were told by the owner (while drinking a bottle of wine) that the maid was still coming. (It was 4pm and we wanted to enjoy an afternoon siesta in our room). Here's the thing..If I owned a resort, and was short staff, I would be the first to be cleaning the rooms myself. Keeping guests happy should be the number one goal and no one should be above cleaning. It just seemed like it was not a priority for the owners to get the rooms cleaned. (During our stay all 7 rooms were occupied so all rooms were uncleaned during this time). Around 6pm, 48 hours later, our room was FINALLY cleaned. We were in desperate need of new towels, TP, and sheets since it was night 5 and 6 for us. Not only that, we wanted to relax and take a nap in a clean bed without sand and not have to worry about a maid coming.

Tulum is a great place for walking the beach and swimming in the ocean and the location of this place is great. I am undecided if I'd go back and stay at La Via Laktea. I know that us 'City People' can have high expectations, but somethings just should not happen when you are paying over $150 a night.

“Great beach location, terrible attitude”

La Via Laktea

Having read the previous reviews we were really excited about our 3 day break at Via Laktea.

The website does show representative photo’s of the cabana’s and the beach is beautiful, on a clear night you can see all the stars and this promised to be an unforgettable stay. However the unforgettable experience that they promised related to the exceptionally bad attitude of the owners.

After a fantastic first night, moonlit sky, and sunny day 2, Night 2 was party time for the owners - thumping music until 2.30am just behind our room wasn’t really what we had in mind! We went down at 2am to ask them to stop but they fobbed us off and carried on for another 30 minutes (as apparently some “famous DJ” was there) and they had the audacity to ask us to shut the screen door on our way out!

There is nothing wrong with a bit of music but if a customer complains surely its time to call it a night?
To make matters worse exactly the same thing happened the next night until 3 am. Obviously the rule here is to hell with you if you have paid in advance.

We may well have just been unlucky and they happened to have their mates staying there at the same time, as the other two reviews are glowing, but the attitude was unbelievable and I wouldn’t recommend anyone chance their vacation on these people. On checking out, the owner got really irate and shouted unnecessarily (as she probably had a hangover from her previous nights party) over a simple misunderstanding of whether breakfast was included in the nightly tariff.

When we dared to even mention the possibility of a discount due to 2 nights of disturbed sleep, we received a response of “yeah whatever” more akin to your average 13-year-old which escalated into shouting and threats to call the police!

I will say on a positive note that the owners were kind enough to organise flowers and wine in our room on our arrival for my birthday, which was a very nice touch, (although please note these were not complimentary), however completely negated by the events on the final day when we checked out.

Our peaceful 3 day break was ruined, we were more tired than when we arrived and staggered by how unreasonable these people were.

Other minor issues were that our bed was very damp and wasn’t changed until our last night and the shower was more of a dribble. Anyone can live with these issues had the wonderful surroundings not been ruined by the owners themselves.

“In Love with La Via Laktea”

La Via Laktea

My boyfriend and I had come down to Tulum for Christmas/New Years and had accommodations up the beach at another hotel that was below standard. Word of mouth and luck landed us 5 nights at Laktea and one of the best experiences I've had there.

Laktea is run by a couple (Bambu and Robert) from Mexico City and had many good suggestions as to eating and adventuring. They are located further down the main road, where newer smaller boutique cabanas and restaurants are opening up. The cabanas are spacious and cool, and open directly onto white beach. It is exceptionally clean and the animals and insects do not get into your living quarters. The property does boast a little grey kitten and a shaved chow-chow that hide in the sand. There is no electricity through out the day, but they faithfully turn on the generator at night so you can charge your phones/laptops, etc.

We felt more like old friends staying over, rather than american tourists come to pillage the beachside. The cleaning lady was cheerful and motherly, with a tendency to whistle and sing when changing the linens. The owners are super-friendly and accommodating. Not wanting to forage for food on the main road, we spent Christmas dinner with the owners and other cabana residents. Bambu organized/cooked a Christmas meal of turkey and authentic mexican mole, & dessert with open bar, coffee and chocolates to finish the night.

Stay here if you can! Online photos of the cabanas are not romanced or Photoshopped. The only thing the photos could never communicate is how much sun and quiet truly surrounds Laktea. Super--great experience!

“Amazing”

Just came back from 3 lovely, sun filled days at Via Laktea. My friend and I sought refuge here after a terrible experience at another hotel (Ocho Tulum) just a few blocks down the beach. Our friends were staying at Laktea and recommended we switch rooms and we were not disappointed. The owners, Bambu and Robert are a really cool Mexican couple who run the hotel with a very bohemian yet sophisticated touch. The rooms are uniquely designed with high lofty ceilings, beautiful art, huge, comfortable beds and picture perfect views of the ocean just steps away. It's immaculately clean and very chill as there's no bar or restaurant (outside of a simple kitchen where they serve breakfast) but you can get whatever you need just a few steps down the beach. We've been to Tulum mulitple times and this by far has been our favorite. Highly recommend Laktea. Enjoy!!!!
