I have been visiting Tulum for the past 6 years and am always eager to try new places. A friend recommended La Via Laktea so I booked a trip. I tried to book direct with the owner but did not hear back so I went though Loco Gringo. The rates seemed a bit steep, but I also took into account that it was a busy time of year. We arrived and our room was clean, comfortable and as described. La Via Laktea's sign says Luxury Cabana's and by Tulum standards, they are. It is important to know that power is limited in this area. Expect to have lights and ceiling fan ONLY between 5 and 10pm daily. If you are staying for more than 4+ days, I'd recommend pulling your linens off the bed if you want to have them changed. I am all for being green and conserving energy, but the heat and humidity can make things a bit funky. After three nights or so, it's nice to have fresh sheets and towels. During our stay, we had the unfortunate experience of the maid being sick/injured. Because of this our room was not cleaned for over 2 full days. Ok, I understand that life happens. What I did not understand was the second full day of not having our room cleaned, we were told by the owner (while drinking a bottle of wine) that the maid was still coming. (It was 4pm and we wanted to enjoy an afternoon siesta in our room). Here's the thing..If I owned a resort, and was short staff, I would be the first to be cleaning the rooms myself. Keeping guests happy should be the number one goal and no one should be above cleaning. It just seemed like it was not a priority for the owners to get the rooms cleaned. (During our stay all 7 rooms were occupied so all rooms were uncleaned during this time). Around 6pm, 48 hours later, our room was FINALLY cleaned. We were in desperate need of new towels, TP, and sheets since it was night 5 and 6 for us. Not only that, we wanted to relax and take a nap in a clean bed without sand and not have to worry about a maid coming.
Tulum is a great place for walking the beach and swimming in the ocean and the location of this place is great. I am undecided if I'd go back and stay at La Via Laktea. I know that us 'City People' can have high expectations, but somethings just should not happen when you are paying over $150 a night.
