We were planning our 10th anniversary vacation and had made a reservation in a hotel in neighboring Guanajuato, when we discovered Casa Don Pascual online. The photos made the hotel look so lovely that we changed our trip at the last moment to stay at Casa Don Pascual in San Miguel (and decided to only visit neighboring Guanajuato).
What a great move that proved to be!
Hosts Herbert and Pascal responded quickly to our request, and we reserved their Vista Real suite. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Herbert and Pascal (and their kind dogs Chapa and Pita), who were friendly, kind, and struck the right balance between being welcoming and offering us the privacy we desired as well.
First, the hacienda style boutique hotel is stunning. It is immaculately clean, beautifully styled, and architecturally fits well within the landscape of San Miguel. The owners clearly care very much about their hotel (which is also their home), and have spared no expense to get it right--from our private balcony to the salt-water pool to the gardens that surround this mountain hideaway.
Second, both Herbert and Pascal are tremendous (and humble) chefs, and employ a kitchen staff who understand how to prepare breakfast dishes that are just delicious. We had no "off days"--each meal was different and unique, and authentic to the region. We enjoyed the morning meals so much that on two occasions we asked our hosts to make dinner for us; we were also most pleased.
Third, the location of the hotel is ideal for exploring the city. Nestled in the hills above the city, the walk down to the city center takes only 15-20 minutes on the ancient cobblestone streets. Buses also run (literally) ever 5 minutes, and so on days when we were winded, we paid a few pesos and were in the center of the city in a few minutes. Be sure to take a cab home, though, as buses back to the hotel can prove challenging (especially if your Spanish is weak and you catch the wrong bus!). However, cab rides are only 25 pesos (roughly $2.50) so you are fine however you decide to go to and fro. There is so much to see and do, and eat, in San Miguel--but on days when we wanted to relax, we were just as satisfied sitting by the pool.
Finally, Herbert and Pascal arranged for activities for us (horseback riding in the mountains; tours of artists' homes; cooking, art, language classes). All to say, we were well taken care of from before we arrived to the moment we departed. We'll certainly return.
