After searching several websites for places to stay in San Miguel de Allende I ran across Casa de la O, I emailed the owner, Lilia and she responded quickly with a link to her website. Since I was traveling with my husband and aunt, we were looking for adjoining rooms or a suite and Lilia helped me arrange this via email.
When we finally arrived (after a delayed flight out of Dallas and another delay at the Queretero bus station) we were pleasantly surprised by our HUGE 2 bedroom, 2 bath 2nd floor apartment (complete with kitchen and enormous living/dinning area). Lilia came up and welcomed us and let us know for the entire place we would be charged $105/day (a quick note here and my only complaint, I suggest paying up front, as we arrived @ 9:30 pm on Thursday and left after breakfast on Tuesday but were charged for 6 days? I am used to being charged per night, but this could have been lost in translation, although we paid for what we felt an extra day/night, we would still stay here again).
The staff were friendly, the guests were friendly and the home was lovely. Lilia is an art collector and has a gallery (small window off the Jardin) and the rooms are filled with art. Breakfast was included in the price and included eggs anyway you choose, fresh squeezed oj, quesadillas, chili quiles, tamale, pan dulce, and toast depending on the day.
The b&b is located approx 3 blocks from the center of town, but be warned the way into town is up a pretty steep grade and while you adjust to the altitude this could be a challenge (like I said, we were traveling with my 76 year old aunt, she required a cab into town but had no problem walking back down the hill). From our second floor apartment we could actually see the top of the famous Cathedral in the center, at night, this view was pretty spectacular.
A word of warning for late sleepers, the b&b is a block away from a school and every morning around 7am the children gather in front for their marching to drum beats for approx 30 minutes. We didn't have a problem falling back to sleep afterwards, but it was quite a shock the first morning.
Overall, we absolutely loved staying here and look forward to our next visit. The location was unbeatable for the price, the service was accomodating and friendly and being our first visit to a b&b we really felt like we had the comforts of a b&b with the privacy of a hotel.
