During the last fifteen years I have visited Los Cabos nine times, and except for once I have always stayed at the Villa La Paloma. That alone should be a positive recommendation.
The hotel is perfectly located at the periphery of Cabo San Lucas – away from the hustle and bustle of “modern downtown”. It’s about a 15 minute walk to get to the center of town, but in the last years the number of peseras (the little colectivo vans) and big busses has been increased dramatically, and one can reach practically any spot for 6 (peseras) or 7 (bus) pesos within a short time frame – particularly as they respond to “whistle stops”.
The 32 suites are pleasantly large, well equipped, and clean. Never have I found any insect infestation! The pool is crystal clear, but probably not the right configuration to swim laps. Observant personnel in the reception keeps a close eye on any happenings, and this may be a major reason that single female visitors frequently express the feeling of safety within the walls of the hotel. Every guest is known by the staff, and the entrance may be controlled by a gate during the night. No, it’s not a place to smuggle in friends for the night or to arrange drinking parties.
I have found the staff always to be very friendly and accommodating. But then – a smile and a por favor helps at this hotel as in any other place!
Yes, it would be nice if the pool bar under the enormous palapa would be operating, particularly for vacationers who want mainly to relax without much effort and movement. With the small number of guests that seems to be not cost effective, and from my experience I have not seen this to be a deterrent to most guests. The next restaurants are just minutes of walk away.
Overall:Villa La Paloma is a reasonably priced attractive hotel close to town, where one can either eat out in close-by restaurants or prepare some meals in one’s own kitchen. It has more of a friendly Mexican flair than those HUGE hotel complexes along the corridor between San Jose del Cabo and CXabo San Lucas, where nightly prices start at $200 - $300.
