“Truly Amazing - Can't wait to visit again!”

My fiancé and I stayed in the resort with my parents in Feb. 2008 through a time share they have with Pueblo. I’ve never stayed at resort as nice as this one. It is now the benchmark for my honeymoon but I know it will be hard to find close in comparison.

The service is unbeatable, food was AMAZING and a most of the restaurants on the property were surprising very reasonable. I’m going to highlight a few of my favorite features and note why some people may think they are negative aspects. It really is a wonderful property and I can’t wait to go back!

Away from the bustle of town – about 5-10 minute drive from the center of town but the resort has a free shuttle that runs to and from town all day (stops around 10-11pm). Sunset Beach is up on a hill around the west side of the city which allows for privacy during the day but the option to go into town at night.

Large resort with lots of pools – even though the resort is huge, you never really noticed it or felt like it was overcrowded. The seven different pools allowed for people to spread out as well. No, you can’t swim on the beach because of the rip tides but we spent every day at the GORGEOUS sky pool and never missed the beach! Yes, we stayed at the top of the resort too and there was a breeze but just enough to keep you cool (remember I was there in Feb.). The service and staff at the pool bar was unreal!

Built into a cliff – Since the resort is so big and literally built into the side of a cliff, you have to rely on the staff picking you up in golf carts and taking you to the different locations (restaurants, pools, front desk, etc). We walked up a hill to the pool everyday but my parents took the cart up – it depends on your health/activity level but it really makes it unique. Yes, sometimes you have to wait 5-10 minutes for a cart to come but you’re on a vacation…relax!

Luxury rooms – it’s a shame we didn’t spend more time in them!

The town of Cabo is an overall excellent place to visit. There is something for everyone… families, honeymooners, singles, teenagers, older adults etc. We would walk around at night and feel very safe. Must try restaurnts: Mi Casa and The Office!

Sunset beach would be an excellent place for all couples, honeymooners, older adults, and even families. The Pueblo Bonito Rose is the sister resort that is in the center of town. It seemed to cater a bit more to families/kids with the activities they offered. The great thing is you can use the Rose’s pool/amities even if you stay at Sunset Beach!

“Overhyped, Overpriced, no accountability, and trying to double bill us.”

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach

I think this is a classic case of a Potempkin Hotel. It's beautiful and serene on the outside, but rather cold and empty on the inside.

First off, they're trying to double bill us for our stay. We paid for the room in advance thru Hotwire (and have the receipts to prove it), and when we checked out they confirmed this, billed us for our room incidentals (which I signed for) and we went on our merry way.

Three days later they put an additional charge of $800 on my credit card, charging me again for each of our nights stay, even though we had already paid in advance. I called immediately and got passed around to about 4 different people, each telling me it wasn't their job. I finally gave up and just challenged it thru my credit card company.

But would you believe when the CC copmpany asked the hotel for an invoice, they sent the one that they tacked onto my bill 3 days later. It had the additional room charges that had not appeared on the original invoice that I signed when I checked out.!

It's a blatant case of fraud and bait and switch; I signed one bill, and they sent another (unsigned) to my CC company. And they have the temerity to continue fighting for the extra $800 in spite of the incontrovertable written evidence that we paid for the room in advance. That's about as slimey as it gets.

As far as the stay, it was mediocre at best. It's definitly over priced, and they nickel and dime you to death. The food is ok, but nothing to sing about, and especially not at those prices.

On a day to day basis, if everything is ok and all you need is room service, you'll probably be fine and the frontline staff will treat you well. But if anything out of the ordinary comes up you're basically on your own. Something even as basic as asking someone to track down the mgr for you to resolve a very simple issue is greeted with a statement of "that's not my job, and I have other work to do." So much for 5 star service.

It took me about 4 days to find a guy who was worth his salary (he was fabulous, but I won't use his name here b/c of his views on hotel management), and from then on I went only to him. But eve he confessed to being flustered with the lackidasical attitude of the staff and said that unfortunately it was rather typical of folks beyond the non-frontline service staff.

Apparently it's an open secret that they're really only interested in the time share folks, and if you're just there as a hotel guest you don't get 5 star treatment.

So proceed at your own peril. And for god's sake, KEEP EVERY SCRAP OF PAPER THAT HAS A BILL ON IT!!!! You may need it later.

“Beautiful Resort/Great Service/Very Windy!”

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach

Jun 17, 2008
4/4 found this review helpful

This was our first trip to anywhere in Mexico. We went for 7 days in June w/ a group of 6. All of us are 35-40. Initial impression of Resort - Gorgeous view of ocean - every room has ocean view! Great check in service. We stayed at top of resort so relied on golf cart service most of the time which was alway speedy- didn't feel we had to tip every time.
Noticed most- the RELENTLESS WIND. Staff kept saying it was unusual & it would quit the next day. Never did. We only got in the awesome heated pools once because it was so cold getting out.
This was very disappointing. The beach was nice to run or walk on even thought you can't swim the waves were great to watch.
Had buffet breakfast & it was worth the $16US each. Ate at The Bistro several times for Breakfast/lunch/dinner. This was our favorite.
Resort Drinks - great -recommend The Dirty Monkey
TIMESHARE PRESENTATION- which was only supposed to take 90 minutes & ours took 3 hours. It was hard sell at the end of it but worth the $200/food & drink cert & $100/spa certificate.
SPA- Awesome. Friends got massages/facials & loved them. I got pedicure & loved it. Staff is friendly & professional.
TRANSPORTATION-Had to take taxi into town each time $10/one way although we did ride free hotel shuttle twice- get tickets in advance-leaves every hour.
PLACES TO EAT in Cabos:
Mi Casa- excellent food & atmosphere.
El Pesicador- small corner restaurant across from Crazy Lobster- GREAT seafood!!
Hung out on Medona Beach at Billigans Bar & also at sister resort of Pueblo Bonita Rosa (could charge drinks to our room)
NIGHT LIFE- Had fun at Cabo Wabo- great place to dance & people watch
Slim's Elbow Room- World's Smallest Bar - try to find it to say you where there.
ACTIVITES: Marina- fun to shop at or boat watch
Shop streets around marina for the good Mexican bartering deals.
Sunset Cruise on Tropicat- Jazz music BUT great appetizers/any kind of drinks- worth the $50/person for this & the views of shore/Land's End arch.
Medona Beach- okay- too cold to swim but fun bars all along.
Constant vendors asking you to buy stuff though.
Deep Sea Fishing- men did & really windy so didn't enjoy it & only caught small fish-not worth the $$
I wouldn't pick Pueblo Sunset to stay at again - it was fun once but it was too windy & too far away from town activities although it would be a nice quiet resort for family time. Kids Club - 24 hr daycare was nice to see.

I am truly grateful for all the great comments in this review even though the inclement weather cost us two rating points. May and June are the windy months on the Pacific side of the peninsula, and on the Cabo Pulmo side it is windy during February and March. This year has been unusually windy and even cold all over Cabo San Lucas and this has been discussed at length by the regulars on the Forum. The water is cold, too. But all that will change soon enough. This week, the third week of June, has been gorgeous.

“Beautiful place”

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach

Jun 15, 2008

My husband and I stayed here 2 years ago on our honeymoon. I understand the frustration with not swimming on the beach, but you must understand that those waters are extremely dangerous and if you take the time to research the property, you would know that before hand. We had an amazing stay and loved every part of Pueblo Bonito. The food was great. The staff was extremely friendly and the property was magnificintly kept. Our room overlooked the ocean and we had the most beutiful view day and night. We didn't see any bugs ( as mentioned by another reviewer) and thought that the place was gorgeous. Very clean. Very friendly and tons of fun. It's not a party place, so if that is what you are looking for you might want to try somewhere else. But then again, we had a great time with tons of great drinks and loved the happy hour. It's all what you make of your time!

“Great Resort for a Relaxing Vacation”

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach

5 of 5 stars
Montclair, New Jersey

We spent June 1-8 at the resort (RCI Exchange) and was very lucky to stay in a presidential suite (2BR). We were in building 22 on the 9th floor. That is the highest building on the highest floor. Our experience at the resort was nothing but positive. After 25 years of timesharing I have to say this was the best place we have ever stayed. The grounds, facilities and rooms were immaculate. But what sets this resort apart was the exceptional service provided by all staff members. I mean everyone! Without exception, was friendly, courteous and anxious to please. We ate at two of the restaurants and the food was always great. I thought the prices were extremely fair for a resort. For example breakfast items for $6.00 or $7.00 dollars. I felt confidant now matter what I ordered the food would be of excellent quality and we ate at the restaurants several times.. If you were at a Marriot you would pay considerably more. Much has been written about the cart transportation around the property. I can add that it was never an inconvenience. I look at it as a unique feature of the resort and its just part of the PBSP experience. It also was a nice way to meet other travelers. We picked up several tips from these cart rides. We knew that the resort was not close to town and we took the free shuttle and then walked into town. Not a big deal. For the whole week we maybe went into town twice. We spent a day at the PB Rose and also an afternoon at Pacific Beach Resort. What is great about that is you don’t need to carry any money because you can charge drinks and food to your room. I was glad we did not rent a car. This is a relaxing type of vacation place, not one where you are running all over the place trying to see everything. We did go deep sea fishing one day and also met a nice couple from Texas who had a car and invited us to go up to Todas Santos to see the Hotel California (yes, the one that inspired the Eagles song).
We did go on the sales presentation and it last just over 90 minutes (we did not ask allot of questions) and it was not high pressure. Regarding the water; we had no problem with the water, we drank the water from the tap and at restaurants. We definitely would go back to this resort or maybe one of the other Pueblo Bonito resorts in Mexico.
