A little background on my previous travels, so that you know where I'm coming from with my review: We are in our mid to late 30's with one 6 year old. Prior All-inlcusives include Moon Palace Cancun, Beaches in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, Occidental Xcaret in Playa Del Carmen. Cruises include Princess, Norwegian and Windstar.
Hotel--The hotel grounds itself is pretty small. This is good and bad. It's good that everything is so close to each other, but the pools are pretty small. It cannot be compared to giant pools with lazy rivers, like those of Playa Del Carmen. Considering that the beach is unuseable for swimming, the pools were a 3/5 overall.
Rooms--We got the 1st floor pool front Terrace rooms. We paid a little more to get these and they were worth it. First, no stairs and second, they had the hammocks right outside your sliding glass window. The rooms were about 3/5 stars. Nothing fancy but it served its purpose.
Food-- the food was actually the best part of the deal. I could honestly say that the food was best of all the All-Inclusives that I've been to. Furthermore, the reservations restaurant food was was on the border of really good to great. My only complaint was that there was only one buffet and one restaurant. They boast multiple restaurants, but that's misleading, because they only open one restaurant per night. They might as well claim that they have 13 restaurants, since they will rotate and open just one a night, anyway. Room service food was good and timely and it costs $2.50 per delivery charge. I hate being nickel and dimed. If you're going to call it an All-inclusive then please live up to your claim. Also, at the restaurants, there is a section on the menu which is extra charge, if you order items such as shrimp, steaks, lobster...etc. Again, if you're going to sell it as an all-inclusive, please be ALL-INCLUSIVE!! The snack bar has pretty darn good quesadillas and nachos.
Beach--They're not kidding folks. It cannot be used for swimming. First of all, the waves are pretty dangerous, including its undertow. Secondly, you don't want to go near it because there is so much horse poop, from the horse riding activity. From the hotel grounds, the beach and water are very pretty. But don't get much closer than that.
Transportation--We made prior reservations with TransCabo for 5 of us going there and 7 of us coming back. The cost is$55 one way or $110 r/t plus taxes equal $114 total. Two in our party arrived on a different flight on the first day, so they took the shuttle to the hotel for $11 a person (no prior reservation). The ride was about 20 minutes going non-stop. The shared shuttle takes about 30 minutes, I'm told.
Downtown San Jose--If you just want to go for a walk, then do it. But, there is really nothing to see. It took about 25 minutes to walk there. We were there for literally 5 minutes and turned back to the resort.
Overall, the resort is a 3.5-4 star resort. The staff is very friendly and helpful; I would give the staff 5 stars.
