“Nice stay, new ownership”

We stayed over Thanksgiving week. The hotel has been recently bought by the "Barcelo" chain. There was lots going on to indicate remodeling/upgrades.
The hotel grounds are beautiful. The pool was nice, I think it was part salt water, so it looked different then a normal chlorinated pool.
We were on the fourth floor, no available elevators.
One side of the has constuction that starts at 7 am, we turned the a.c. off to drown out the sound.
The beds are hard, order a mattress pad and it was delivered immediately.
The room was huge, and was moderately appointed.
We had room service and ate at the Chula Vista restaurant once, the food was okay.
The Mega store one block away is convenient, but you need to know some spanish to know what you are buying.
The staff was nice, but again, best to know some Spanish (I had no idea how to say "well done" in spanish and it caused some confusion) I do believe I should know Spanish better when visiting Mexico, so nothing against the staff.
Not many people were there, so never a problem getting a poolside chair. The poolside chairs and beds were so comfortable!
I believe the resort will be so much nicer under new management.

I read some reviews on this place but thought I'd give it a shot because there were some good and some bad reviews. I have to say that the service was really good at the front desk for the most part. The hotel is right on the water and it's almost in the perfect location. My problems are that they have major construction going on. I was on the third floor and the elevator on my wing wasn't in operation so I had to walk up and down. All the construction also makes it seem like the hotel is deserted. When they sent me to my room they didn't explain the construction and I had to walk all the way back to the front desk and ask them to show me to my room. The room itself is OK. It's spacious but I didn't have any hot water.

The beach itself in the area isn't the best but maybe I'm spoiled because I'm from Hawaii. It doesn't seem as welcoming and a lot of groups of local men hang out on the beach and I was uncomfortable walking alone in the daytime.

The breakfast buffet is not bad. For $20 you get fresh fruit, mimosas if you want, waffles, Mexican food, etc. The service was really slow overall.

I got a massage at the spa and I thought it was wonderful. The lady was really nice and the spa room was extremely relaxing.

“Stay Away from the Grand Baja”

Barcelo Los Cabos

Sep 21, 2007
3/7 found this review helpful

Our visit to the Grand Baja was majorly dissappointing. Not only was the resort desolate (not many people around), but the staff is unhelpful and rude, most times. There is no lobby area, but a tent setup in the small parking lot to greet guests. This resort is also very small; one small pool, broken beach chairs, loud annoying music being played by the pool throughout the day. The only redeeming quality about the resort is the rooms, they are large and nicely furnished - however, the bed is very hard and uncomfortable; and there are adjoining doors in every 1BR room to another "lock-off" room. There were ants in the kitchen, and construction noise from a neighboring condo being built. The resort is not secluded, but situated on a busy street (in a bit of a shady area) with no real security in place. Here are a few of the issues that we encountered, there are too many to go through each in detail:

I am a very organized planner for vacations. I find out all possible details about any resort destination before booking anything. My impression of the Grand Baja from their website and discussions that I had with the resort as well as others were very positive. I was under the impression that the resort had 3 full service restaurants. This was told to me by the resort and displayed on the resort's website. Upon check-in, I was told that two of the three restaurants had closed and all that was available was the outdoor casual restaurant. There were many opportunities for this resort to inform me of this prior to our check-in (I frequently e-mailed with them as well, in conjunction with planning my trip here) but nothing was said.
When requesting information about the closing of the restaurants from various employees, we received vastly different responses which were apparently not always truthful. At one point, one of the employees at the Reception desk was appalled by what we told her and even asked the name of another employee who told us this outlandish lie as we described the story to her.
When I voiced my disappointment for the above to management, the resort's reservation manager, Anna, informed me that the resort has the right to open/close facilities as they wish without informing guests. She offered no apology, nor any remuneration for the inconvenience/disappointment, which would be commonplace at most upscale establishments.
Additionally, my fiance and I attempted to rent a car from the Avis representative at the resort. The only vehicles that she was offering to us were Jeeps with no windows (the zippered windows had been removed and stored elsewhere). Not only did she want to charge us an upgrade fee for this vehicle when it was all she had left, but she refused to call the airport headquarters to see if there were other cars available. After we had had enough of her rude attitude toward us, I walked 10 feet to the resort's concierge who called the airport headquarters for Avis and they informed her that there was a Ford Focus available for rent. Not only did this waste 2 hours of our vacation, but it also made us very agitated and to say the least, this was not a relaxing day.
Another item that I would like to mention is that this resort does not offer any internet (even wired) through its rooms, which is inconvenient if one wants to check in with work while vacationing from time to time. The hotel does not even offer a civilized place at which to check one's e-mails. They have an "internet cafe" that is not air-conditioned and is poorly ventilated, and when it is 90 or more degrees outdoors, it is virtually unbearable to visit this cafe. Also, they will charge $8 per hour, even if you bring your own laptop in and stay for 10 minutes to download a few e-mails.
Additionally, it is located in a busy part of San Jose del Cabo directly on a main road next door to a construction site on one side and what the locals refer to as a "swingers resort" on the other.

“Overpriced”

Stayed 4 nights at the Grand Baja. Family had one of their 2 bedroom suites. We just wanted a place to sleep since we would be in their living room most of the time. I tried to find out if that was possible and couldn't find a number for the hotel itself. The website links to another company that handles the reservations. When I called that number they said the smallest unit was a one room suite. But they do in fact have single bedrooms.

The hotel grounds were very nice and the view was spectacular. The pool was awesome. The negatives were:
1. Two of the three restaurants were closed while we were there, it was the offseason, so that might be expected.
2. The $50 Travelocity food and beverage credit does not go towards tips. So we ended up not using it all.
3. There is no internet in the room, and it's $8 per hour at their café
4. The fully equiped kitchen was not quite fully equiped. There is no oven and my parents room did not have a microwave.
5. There weren't many channels on the TV. No espn (only espn int).

Well, this is a 2-3 star hotel! The veiw is good. The pool is TERRIBLE, HOT AND DIRTY! The drinks are a bit over priced. The hotel food is OK ! You must go to the seven seas, The food EXCELLENT and the view is even better!! If you are looking for a clean 4-5 star stay this is not it!! The rooms look ok when you walk in, but the coach is dirty the shower has mold, the floor dirty! I watched the cleaning lady one day and omg gross!!! Yes the construction went form 6-12 every day! Make sure you get your pool towel cards back every day they will charge you if you don't turn them in at the end! Also do not charge anything to your room, pay cash!!! Use your cell phone it cost less!!! They are not very kid friendly. My husband and I have been going to cabo for 20 years and yes it is not the USA, but now with them wanting to charge like the USA we expect more.
