Our reservation was made three months in advance. A King room and late arrival were guaranteed to our AMEX, which was important, as we were visiting El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary en route to Morelia from Mexico City...a long day. Our reservation was not honored. We were told that the room was occupied by a guest who failed to check out and that nothing could be done. After an excruciatingly long interaction with the clerk, we asked for the manager. We waited at least 20 minutes for him to arrive. He did not acknowledge us or apologize. He left with keys (apparently to check the room inventory), returned and told the clerk to offer us a Double + Twin, dinner on the house, and a guarantee to move us to a King room the next day. At that late hour, we had no other choice. Now, about the rooms....
The Double + Twin was in the back on the second floor. There were no windows to the outside. There was one window that opened to an air shaft and faced the windows of adjacent rooms. Since no air circulated into our room from that window and it was necessary to keep the drapes closed for privacy from the opposing room's windows, the atmosphere in the room was stifling and dungeon-like. The room appeared clean with new carpeting and clean, crisp bed linens. The mattresses were VERY firm and the pillows were hard as rocks. In the bathroom, there was a window (that did not open) with a panel at the bottom of it that could be tilted to open a small vent slot to the air shaft (no exhaust fan). The tile and grout of the shower was stained with mildew and the showerhead produced a miserly flow. The towels were clean and fresh. A hairdryer and Nuetrogena toiletries were provided.
As promised, we were moved to a King room the next day. We were given a room on the first floor (which is actually the second floor) with a balcony overlooking the plaza, which offered a lovely view. The room was so small that the bed just about filled it up. We could barely open our luggage. Again the bed and pillows were hard and uncomfortable, but the linens were fresh and clean. There were large glass doors opening to the balcony with heavy wooden shutters to close oven them. It was not possible to keep them open for ventilation at night due to the extreme noise from the activity on the plaza and road below, so once again, we were in a stifling atmosphere. I would not recommend the front rooms unless you can sleep through pandemonium. The shower tile and grout were again stained with mildew and the showerhead was inadequate. The towels and toiletries were good. There was a hairdryer and coffee maker provided.
The entrance to the hotel is directly on the street and there is no designated loading zone or parking space. You have to pull up to hotel entrance and find a bellman inside the hotel to unload your car on the street. The bellmen were courteous, friendly and efficient. Valet parking is complementary, except after 10:00 PM.
The hotel has a dining room as well as outdoor dining in front with a view of the plaza, which serves adequate to good food. Service can be slow, but the wait staff is cordial and helpful.
I would not be inclined to stay at this hotel in the future because I prefer comfort, ventilation and sunlight over convenience; however, to those travelers who are less particular and more adaptable, it would be a reasonable choice.
