We booked an Epiculinary cooking school vacation at Meson Sacristia, and were very happy with our accomodations at the boutique hotel.
One thing to consider at Meson Sacristia is that there are three types of rooms - one has no windows, one has windows facing the street, and one has windows facing the glassed-in courtyard. We were in all three rooms, for different reasons! When we first checked in, we were given a windowless room. After about an hour, we determined there was no way we could stay there for six nights! We asked to be moved to a room with real windows, but that room was right over the nightclub across the street. While Sacristia has done a lot to block out the noise - new double-paned windows, blackout doors - they can't do much about people laying on their horns at 1 a.m., and early-morning on-street singalongs when the club closes! So we finally got it right with the room that had only an interior courtyard window. We're not usually a high-maintenance, room-switching couple, but I'm afraid this time we were!
Security at the hotel was great. Since the rooms open up to the courtyard, and the courtyard is accessible directly from the street, it was good to see someone out there at all times making sure we were all there to either get to our rooms or to the restaurant. Not that I thought we needed a huge amount of security in Puebla, it was just a nice touch.
Some people have remarked on the noise from the courtyard. It really does depend on your tolerance level. Yes, it was lively down there from mid-afternoon until about 11 p.m. But I really liked the fact that I could go just downstairs to the courtyard for a drink and food, and was willing to trade silence for convenience. One night there was a wedding with a live band, but the staff assured us without our having to ask that the party would wind down by 11 p.m. And it actually did, much to our surprise!
The one problem we had was with water temperature. We were absolutely unable to get warm or hot water for a couple of mornings. I understand from the other reviewers that there have been problems with scalding hot water - if only! The staff was great about fixing the problem, though. However, I'd like to suggest they look into fixing that problem permanently. The nightly cost of a room at that hotel is not cheap, and people like us staying there will expect the bare minimum, like a shower with correct water temperature.
Staff at the hotel, and affiliated with the sister hotel and cooking school, were just excellent. Elisa, our cooking school translator and overall scheduler, was organized, professional, and very warm. Chef Alonso from the cooking school did a great job. The tour guide affiliated with Meson Sacristia, Carlos Riveros, was a real treasure. Very knowledgable, as well as very affable -- he put up with my shaky grasp of Spanish and never tired of all our questions about language, culture, and history.
