We stayed here June 14-21,2008. We've actually been to Puerto Vallarta several times and find it very relaxing. We've stayed in places near town, in the Marina and in Nuevo Vallarta. If you are looking to do alot in town I would stay at the Sheraton or somewhere close to that. We've stayed in the Marina area which requires a bus trip but I still consider a reasonable distance. From Nuevo... it just takes too long to get to town and we didn't venture out as much.
We had a 2 bedroom unit in the yellow building which is the closest to the pool and the activity center.. the room was ok... nothing fancy... We were told that it was a quieter week than the week before. It wasn't difficult to get chairs around the pool or on the beach. We did stay at the beach alot, stayed under the umbrellas, stayed in the shade by the pool and used lotion with SPF 85. This sun is really really really strong and we still got a nice tan using SPF 85.
My 15 year son said the exercise room had some old equipment and the arcade wasn't anything special. He enjoyed the wave runners... he did it 3 times and said that the morning run was over calmer water and the afternoon runs were much tougher... more waves to jump and more air time. He pushed the speed and said the afternoon run (around 2-3pm) ... was much more challenging and difficult.
It wasn't hard to get a golf cart ride TO the Sea Garden where if you walked half block it was easy to catch a bus to Walmart.(12 pesos) When you get off the bus... you don't cross the street but walk down to the next bus stop on the same side of the street... maybe 2-3 blocks... it wasn't very far. The ride (Centro Directo) into town cost 5 pesos. Once you get into town the bus will make several stops before it turns left off the main road. We always got off here and then started our walk on the Malecon. There's a tequila shop on the corner which offers free samples.
We did take the bus back to the resort but found it extremely difficult to catch the last bus back from Walmart to Nuevo. From downtown you get off the bus on the corner just before it gets to Walmart. (the bus will make a right turn before it gets to Walmart). You need to stay on the main street and walk a short distance to the bus stop in front of Walmart. The last connection here is just before 10:00pm. There are so many buses that come to this bus stop and it was nerve wracking watching as each one left and it wasn't your connection. After we finally got off the bus we walked back to the Sea Garden where there was a long line for the golf cart rides so we walked back to the Mayan..After a long day... this walk was painfully long. We were beat by the time we got back to our room. TOTALLY recommend a taxi for your return to the resort.
We went to a restaurant called Lagunas just outside of the resort area in Nuevo ($3US by cab) and they offer some amazing seafood. There's a seafood platter ($45US) which is really excellent (fish, crab, lobster, shrimp, scallops) and a seafood soup ($12US) which can be a meal by itself. The restaurant sits over a river and there's usually a few big turtles in the water..
In downtown...We did go to Pipis for their fajitas. We've been here several times in the past but we didn't find it that special this time. It's probably because we're from California and we have some really good Mexican restaurants which offer the same or better Mexican dishes.. Our favorite stop for fruit bars/ice cream... is on a corner store next to Hooters. They have the best strawberry and coconut fruit bars.. There's also a Cuban restaurant on the Malecon which has wonderful paella and Mojitos.
We didn't have any problems with the timeshare people. You do need to get your red bracelet bands right after check-in otherwise they will call you the next day to ask you to come back to get the bands.
It costs $12US to take a taxi back to the airport. But double check before you get into te cab. Rates may change.
