My husband and I just returned from a 7 night, honeymoon stay at The Post Hotel and Spa. Although originally scheduled to honeymoon in Jamaica, Hurricane Dean changed our plans for - sorry Jamaica - the better. Since our travel plans were so last minute, I called the Hotel directly and was lucky enough to secure a K suite on the preferred side of the property. I mentioned only once that it was our honeymoon and the gentleman must have been listening attentively because upon arrival a bottle of chilled Moet, six chocolate covered strawberries, and a basket of fresh fruit was waiting!
The room itself was beautiful, with a fireplace, double jacuzzi tub, separate shower, living room, small kitchen area, balcony with seating area overlooking a stream, and the most plush king bed I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in! Nightly turn-down service offers sweet truffles on your pillow and a bottle of water per person on the nightstand. Kindling and logs for the fire are replaced daily and nice bath salts are provided for the jacuzzi.
As my husband and I are from New York, we are accustomed to high prices and excellent service. The Post was certainly above average, but some small details in the service could be improved. For example, housekeeping never cleaned our suite exactly the same during the entire seven nights we were there. Something small (a towel, fresh fruit, half and half, cleaning supplies) was inevitably forgotten. Afternoon tea and coffee service was inconsistent: certain servers were extremely attentive and offered refills on everything and other servers came by once and then we were forgotten. On a bright note, every bellman on staff was wonderful, particularly Shaun from Wales, who took care of every detail for us with a smile and was more than willing to offer hiking suggestions and spots of interest during our stay.
The food and service at the main restaurant, which has rightfully won many awards and has a world-class wine list, was excellent. If you go, get the bacon-wrapped bison and splurge on your favorite wine, no matter how generally difficult to find, they'll have it. Try the eggs Benedict for breakfast. As for the food at the Outpost Pub and the limited food and cake offerings at the bar during afternoon tea, well, we've certainly had better and spent far less money in New York. To us, the food in general in Canada was either over salted or overly sweet, and these two places were no exception. There was a decadent Coupe Denmark ice cream sundae with local chocolate sauce, strawberry, chocolate chip cookie, and homemade vanilla ice cream that we returned for almost nightly.
The gym was nice, although open only until 9pm, which is kind of early to close considering night doesn't fall until 10pm and and may people - including us - were out late exploring the sites. There is also a nice steam room near the small pool.
The library is a great place to relax for an hour and has a good selection of titles to read during your stay.
This property is truly beautiful. I would recommend that travelers spend the extra money to stay on the preferred side of the property. To cut down on food costs, my husband and I brought some food to prepare in the room and also stopped for reasonably priced groceries (especially for breakfast) in Banff. We were happy we did so.
Explore Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, head over to Johnston Canyon, hike around Peyto Lake, drive along the Icefields Parkway and take a walk on a glacier, and finally, make the haul to Jasper. It is well worth it!
