“Great Business Hotel - centrally located”

The Westin Calgary

4 of 5 stars
Vancouver, BC
Apr 23, 2008

Westin Calgary is a perfect business hotel. Checkin and luggage is efficient, for the business traveller. The buffet breakfast at the Essence restaurant leaves little to be desired. At $22, the buffet is priced so that ordering al carte is about the same if you had an egg, toast and coffee. Downstairs, there is a lined-up Starbucks, and the new Keg steakhouse is awesome (servers are friendly and looking around to the other "single" diners, other business travellers seemed to be having a good time too), and their lounge is a great place to meet colleagues for a drink. The Westin's heavenly beds and showerheads are excellent, and the rooms are quiet, spacious, with a wall safe and a good sized desk to work on. I liked the 24 hour fitness/pool - since I never sleep well the first night away - you can work out anytime. The staff are friendly and very helpful, and this hotel is centrally located - walking distance to most everywhere in downtown Calgary, and if cold, you can take the indoor Plus 15 walkway system that connects directly to the hotel. Most downtown hotels have limited views, but my room had a river view and was very pleasant. Compared to their other resorts, this Westin was very "business", and not as romantic as a W or a Fairmont.

“Nice rooms and gym. Inconsistent service and better amenities elsewhere.”

The Westin Calgary

4 of 5 stars
Edmonton
Mar 30, 2008

I've stayed at this hotel several times over the past 8 years. It's centrally located for the business traveler and is best for business clientele.

The hotel is in central downtown, within walking distance to office towers, shops, and C-Train. Parking is expensive on weekdays but it drops to around $12/day on weekends.

Check-in is typical. Front desk staff are usually friendly and professional but I've had a couple of surly staff. There are two towers. Try to get in the newer tower and an upgrade to a business level room.

The rooms in the tower are generally nicer. The business plan on weekends is quite reasonable and includes internet and breakfast. The more basic rooms can be cramped. The hotel has screwed up my reservation for two queen beds before and left 3 of us to share a room with a queen bed and one very uncomfortable cot. Internet is around $13/day if I remember correctly.

The gym is small but the equipment is excellent. The pool is also fairly well kept and adjacent to the gym in the towere.

Perfunctory restaurant... you're better off going elsewhere. Breakfast buffet can be inconsistent. I've been there on some days when it's very good and other days when it's barely edible. The restaurant also doubles as the only thing the hotel has for a lounge. Again, go elsewhere for a drink. A Starbucks opened just off the main lobby this summer. Limited room service menu also.

“Nice hotel.”

The Westin Calgary

Mar 20, 2008

This is the 3rd time I have stayed at the Westin - Calgary on business.

Here are some of the highlights:

-rooms are spacious and clean. Beds are very comfortable (down duvet).

-their hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. I had an excellent experience with their shipping and receiving agent (Marcus), who ensured that all my packages sent to the hotel from Toronto were received and shipped back efficiently.

-it is within short walking distance to the large shopping centre in downtown Calgary.

-one block away from a great litte eatery called Fourth at Fourth. The salads and sandwiches at this place are full portions at very reasonable prices.

I look forward to visiting this hotel again soon.

“One night at the Westin”

The Westin Calgary

2 of 5 stars
canada
Mar 16, 2008

As a Starwood Platinum member decided to try the Westin Calgary out as we needed a one night stay in Calgary. Although another Starwood property _ Sheraton Eau Claire_ had great reviews we decided to go with the Westin.
To start, a nice touch as received an email the day before asking if I needed any special requests taken care of etc.,
Arrived at around 22:00 hrs and nobody assisted us upon arrival...well actually that was not true. Someone came after we had removed all of our luggage from the taxi and carried it up to the doors because it was all wet. I guess better late than never !! Not that big of a deal to start as we only had a few pieces of luggage. Sometimes I prefer to just take my own anyway. My point is ....first impressions are everything. Now .....here is where other people might really disagree with me........The Westin Lobby I think feels really cold and NOT welcoming at all. You barely get into the doors and bang you are at the check in booths and don't really see any Lobby area whatsoever to sit etc., Just a weird feeling....I gave the service rep my last name and he looked for my room. He never recognized me as a platinum member so just before he was about to tell me my room........I hate doing this because they are the ones that should be doing it....but I then asked if there were any upgrades available as a plat and preferably in the tower building. I thought because it was a Saturday night I should have no problem. He said nothing in the tower as it is completely full ?? o.k. but I will give you an executive suite. I said thank you very much and went on our way. We arrived in the room to find it was a queen bed ? I reserved a King. We were very tired - I phoned to customer service and explained that I apparently received an upgrade but the King I reserved just got put down to a queen. I explained that it did not matter I just want a room with a King and and at this point I could care less about any type of ugrade if I was inconveniencing anyone. She said just stay in the room and she will call back in about 10 minutes. At this point I am saying to myself - I should have just kept my mouth shut and took whatever room I originally had. She did call back within probably 5 minutes and said they have a room with a King. She said nobody would be able to come up and switch keys or luggage for awhile as they were too busy.....I said that's o.k. I will return to the front desk with my keys for exchanging. Did the same and got to our room. Nothing wrong with the room whatsoever- obviously we were in the older tower and it is aging. It was clean and nice. Satisfied. Woke up early in the morning for a flight out and checked out with no problems. Once I left I did realize that I was also not offered my platinum emenity - which I wanted extra starpoints. I phoned the hotel from the airport and she said she will change it for me. I will wait and see if it happens. All and all nothing wrong with the hotel - the staff were very kind and courteous. I just felt that as a SPG member - they could have cared less and I actually had to do all the reminding and running around.......which sometimes just irks me !! Not sure but might give them a second chance next time or try out the Sheraton Eau Claire suites just down the road.

“Nice downtown hotel”

The Westin Calgary

4 of 5 stars
New York City, New York
Feb 20, 2008

I used priceline to book this hotel, because I was just in Calgary for one night. I needed something downtown, and the Westin ending up being very nice. I like the Westin chain (love the heavenly bed) and this hotel did not disappoint. The staff was very friendly and the concierge was helpful. It is within walking distance of Eau Claire market and Prince's Island Park. I can't think of anything to complain about.
