I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Calgary South for one night July 11th as my daughter and I were in town to visit the Stampede and go to a concert.
Upon arrival my initial thought was that the hotel looked fairly new with nice marble looking floors in the lobby and dark wood accents. The front desk staff were friendly and quickly found a room for us which we were not expecting, as this is the busiest time of year for them I thought we would have to wait a while. So we were able to have a quick look at the pool ( nice size, great waterslide but didn't get chance to go in) drop our bags in the room and hit the stampede.
The room was large , nice size for a family . It was clean with all the usual amenities including a microwave. The bathroom was also a good size and the towels were big and fluffy.
However, the beds were horrible , it was like sleeping on a concrete slab and the bedding was nasty. Our pillowcases looked like they had not been changed and they smelt like it.The sheets were clean ( I think !) but did not smell great. The iron did not work and the front of the phone was missing so we could not retrieve our messages which I didn't discover until the next morning.
When we got in it was past midnight and there was no one at the front desk to tell about the pillow cases so we put towels on our pillows and went to sleep exhausted.
The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. There were cereals, breads, muffins, bagels and cinnamon buns, fruit, yogorts, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, omelettes, juice and tea and coffee.
Other than the problems I had with the room the only negative thing I have to say is that the common areas were very hot. It was as if the heating was on full blast, very uncomfortable. The air conditioning in the rooms was great but as soon as you opened your door you were hit by a blast of heat. The hallways, elevator, lobby and breakfast area were all way too hot.
I mentioned my concerns regarding the pillowcases etc to the front desk and they gave me a discount and a promise of a discount and an upgrade in the future. Not certain if I will take them up on it as I don't think I can face sleeping on those beds again but it was a nice gesture and they handled it well.
Overall, a nice hotel for somewhere to stay for a night but they need to spend some money and upgrade their sheets.
The hotel is located almost at the end of Mcleod Trail, which is a little out of the way, but instead of driving I recommend using the CRT. You can park your car up the road at the bus station and walk over to catch the train. Very easy to do and convienient for going to Chinook Mall , Stampede Park or downtown.
Hope this helps and enjoy your stay.
