Located in a very commercialized area a few miles south of downtown Calgary, the outside of this hotel could use a facelift. The plaster was rotting away and the colors made it look even worse. It is a pretty large hotel though, with 6 floors. Easy to find.
When we entered the lobby, we were expecting a little different. Not bad, but very basic with an odd divider that hid the office equipment behind the desk. We were traveling with a large group and at first, they said the rooms weren't available yet. After a couple minutes, they were, I guess the housekeepers had just called them in as clean.
After getting off the bus, we headed to the elevator. WOW, the scarriest elevator that I had ever been in. Surprisingly, it looks pretty new and modern, but once we started moving, it made some horrible sounds which made you think that it was going to break down any second. This was true for both elevators and happened each time so eventually, we got used to it. The hallways were a little dark and gloomy.
Once we got to our rooms, we found them to be normal size, but not queen beds, double beds. They look like they had some fairly new furniture and bedding, but the room still seemed a little gloomy. The windows had condensatioin in between and the tiny slide open window only opened a few inches. There are very few outlets in the room and two of them did not work, including the one that the air conditioner was plugged into.
Even though the room was clean, the bathrooms left something to be desired. Loose floor tiles, cracking walls, stained ceiling panels and a rust encrusted shower head was a little depressing. We expected a little more, but lived with it.
Located on the lower level, just below the lobby, is their pool area. Very surprised. Nicely renovated and very clean. Nice and bright and the water was warm. The pool was shallow, only 5 feet deep, but served the purpose. The hot tub was very warm and spacious. Nice at the end of the day!
Since it is a Travelodge, we kinda figured there would be a basic breakfast, but we didn't realize that there WASN'T one. They advertise a "restaurant", but there's signs for a "Comedy Cave" and no restaurant. We never really understood if the restaurant was included with their comedy club, but didn't have breakfast.
Staff was a little inexperienced, and called us a couple times with a noise complaint which wasn't us, but oh well...
The area around the hotel is decent, but the parking lot is narrow and there's signs all over saying the hotel is not responsible for damage and that type of stuff....kinda scarry if you think about it.
Overall, we wouldn't stay here again, but we can see that the hotel is slowly going under some renovations. There are lots of restaurants in the immediate area, not really walking distance though. A nice mall down the way with a great food court and an IMAX (Chinook). I'm sure after they renovate the entire place, it will be nice, but it's certainly a little worn right now...
