As others have said, the rooms are nicely appointed, with good quality bathroom amenities, good quality TV, location is in a high-activity neighbourhood. Our room faced the back, and was not noisy.
The breakfast quality was so-so, but I appreciated the hard-boiled eggs. The muffin was stale. I threw out one of the things that sort of looked lilke a croissant, as it just wasn't worth the calories.
You are no longer required to use valet parking. You can park in a lot which is about 3 blocks away for no extra charge.
Staff were friendly and as cooperative as their limited scope seemed to allow.
My biggest problems were (1) no place to put your luggage, and (2) dreadful beds.
I will start with the beds. These are just pillow-top mattresses on top of a board; there is no box spring. Although they told me the place is only 3 years old, and implied that the beds can't be in bad repair, they are. All you have to do is pull out the sheet at the side of the bed, and you will see that the mattress is broken down and sags. A mattress on a board is tolerable when you're young, and I'm sure they think it saves them some money, but it's a bad idea to only serve the young, and it's a false economy to try to save money by eliminating the necessary box springs.
When we complained about the bed, we were moved to a larger room with a fireplace. It was a very pleasant room, and the bed was marginally better - probably because, being a more expensive room, the bed had not been used as often. The problem was that there was no place at all to put your luggage, unless you wanted to leave it in the middle of the floor or trip over it when you went to the bathroom. It is one of the worst designs I have seen, for that reason. We ended up moving all the furniture around. What were they thinking?

Great hotel.

The staff were helpful and very friendly. The room I stayed in is very spacious, quiet, comfortable and clean. The decor and styling of this hotel are excellent. You're right on Whyte and within walking distance to the U of A. This will be at the top of my list next time I come back to Edmonton.

A very nice hotel overall. Free internet access, good gym and helpful front desk service. Comfortable , quiet rooms too(not noisy at all in my opinion) I recommend room 916 as it had a great view and was quite spacious. I liked the area also, which is right outside the front door. The only two things i didn't care for were a) the breakfast which was too limited time-wise and just ok (although the espresso machine there makes more than decent cappucinos for free) and b) how warm my room was. (I asked to get it fixed but no luck--it was still pretty hot in there throughout my stay)

“Excellent Option on Whyte Ave”

I was booked into the Mettera when their sister property, the Varscona was sold out. I was initially dissapointed because I was looking forward to the Varscona- however the Met more than exceeded my expectations.

The staff were lovely. The decor is fantastic in the lobby and in the rooms. A very comfortable stay.

I love Whyte Ave- you have so much selection for dining and shopping right at your doorstep. A great hotel.

“Romantic Get Away”

Metterra Hotel on Whyte

Nov 11, 2007

We stayed two nights for a romantic get away. The staff were very nice and the hotel is just as nice. We stayed on the top floor facing the city as we request when we booked the room. They do room service, wine tasting with various cheeses at night which is a perfect pre dinner activity, in the morning they offer a breakfast which is a 'healthy breakfast' with fruit yogurt ...etc, which is nice from the regular eggs and hashbrows at most hotels. The hotel in right in the middle of lots of excellent resturants. We would highy recommend this hotel, however be ready to spend some money...on the flip side its very much worth it.
