“Easy access to the West Edmonton Mall”

Marriott Edmonton at River Cree Resort

We stayed at this hotel on the West Edmonton Mall leg of our trip. The hotel seems to be far away from the mall on the map but it is an easy ten minute drive.

The hotel was very large and it was connected to the casino. There was lots of free parking (probably because the hotel is very isolated).

The staff is very friendly, they seem to genuinely want you to have a good stay.

There is an exercise room with several treadmills that have built-in televisions. The room has an all in one weight machine. We didn't use the pool but it was very small and shallow.

This hotel was very clean and new looking. I think some of the other users on this site said it was built in late 2006.

Each room has a large flat screen television. The beds were very comfortable but the light coming from the smoke detector and alarm might keep some people up.

I recommend this hotel for any type of stay.

“Excellent Value, Great Service, Fantastic Food”

Marriott Edmonton at River Cree Resort

This hotel is upscale and very new as of September 2007. The soft beds have modern clean linens, loose fitting over-size comforters and big fluffy pillows. My wife said it was a big de-stressor just to sink into them. The washroom is clean and modern, and the bath products are of good quality. Free coffee and tea in the room, and a large flat screen TV round out the package. Our room had a great view (East) of the downtown skyline and West Edmonton mall which is close. I asked, and it turns out that about 50% of the rooms have one king bed and 50% have two double beds, so if you make your reservation on price line, be sure to call the hotel and ask for a room with a view of the skyline and the bed type of your preference. The view West is pretty boring - farmer's fields. Also there are 8 floors, so try for floor 6-8 for the best view. We were on 6. The entire hotel is non-smoking, which is very excellent. We had the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning and the eggs benedict on the buffet were world class. Also the fruit juice (of your choice) that comes with breakfast is very good, I couldn't tell if it was fresh squeezed, but it was definitely of top quality. There is obviously at least one chef on duty The buffet was only $9.99 if you eat before 11:00am. There was a big lineup, so best to make your reservation the day before for breakfast. A number of people gave up waiting, because they could not be served until after 11:00am when the price (for brunch) goes up to $24.99 (although they were offering $10.00 off per-couple brunch certificates.) What impressed us most about this hotel was the staff. Every person we met, the waitress, front desk staff, bell hops, maids, maintenance engineers, were friendly, helpful, prepared, and effective problem solvers. And we did have a tough problem, I booked the wrong date on price line. Both price line and the hotel were very flexible and between them we were able to fix this problem. The hotel could not fix it unilaterally because we arrived 2 weeks ahead of our reservation and they cannot bill priceline until 2 days before arrival. Credit goes to both Priceline and Marriott fixing my mistake, in spite of their stated policy to the contrary. Also, this hotel has priceline bid prices lower than others in the area. I understand from the staff that they get a lot of business from priceline, and another reviewer seemed to have the same experience. Remember to include the West Edmonton area in your bid search. This hotel is a good base for shopping at West Edmonton Mall (according to another reviewer there is a free shuttle bus.). It is also a reasonable good base to downtown Edmonton if you go North on Hwy 216 the East on the Yellowhead Highway for a few minutes. This is reasonably quick. On Saturday night the parking lot was pretty packed when we got back, due to the Casino, so we went to the back of the hotel near the employee entrance and found some close in parking there. Parking is above ground, so in the winter when it gets below -40F, this would be important. We paid $82.00+Tax on priceline by bidding on the room => US$99.00. An excellent value in my wife's opinion. Much better than last time when we got much less for more money. I hear what the other reviewers are saying about the smokers out front and the clientele, but the clientele aren't that rough, just Edmonchuck country boys out for a good time, and if you walk into the entrance straight in from the parking lot you can avoid the smokers. My wife's assessment was, "you know, if we did one of these every six months, it would be just right". Overall impression: Wife-satisfaction score improved.

“River Cree? Not for me!”

We stayed at the Marrioot whilst on a five day West Edmonton Mall shopping trip. Warning; this hotel is in the middle of nowhere. Not much to do, unless you like big casinos. The driver of the courtesy shuttle van was anything other than courteous. I believe she grunted one word, ("yah" when we asked if she was going to the mall) during the ride and then we had to endure loud rap music each trip. The restaurant food was good but service is slooooooow. Once the food did arrive, not once did the waitress check on us. We reserved a Sky Service ride to the airport days before leaving and found out the morning of our flight that the front desk staff had given us the wrong times. We would have missed the flight home but they called a cab for us saying the driver would charge us the same amount as the shuttle. When he arrived, though the driver argued with us that he couldn't reduce the fare. I didn't give in and after starting to pull my suitcase out of the car, he radioed his dispatch after which he advised he could in fact take us. Little things like the above make a big difference to me and go a long way in customer satisfaction or lack thereof. I can say, however that this hotel chain has the best bed coverings ever (down duvets and quality cotton sheets.) Just like home!

“Nice Hotel, Great Value at the River Cree”

Marriott Edmonton at River Cree Resort

Like others, we reserved this hotel through Priceline bidding and we were delighted with our stay there. The hotel has been open less than a year, but it has been maintained very well since opening -- all areas were very clean. The tiotal non-smoking environment in this hotel was wonderful (unlike others, we did not find smoke from the adjoining casino or the smoking area outside the main lobby entrance to be too much of a problem).
The location is on the extreme western fringes of Edmonton but it is exceptionally easy to get anywhere since it is very close to two major aterial roadways (Whitemud Drive and Anthony Henday Drive). The value and quality offered by this property more than made up for the location.
Staff are friendly and helpful, but it is evident they are struggling a little with employing enough -- there was no bellhop in sight if you needed help with your bags, and the front desk was attended lightly at times. But then again, ALL hotels and other service businesses in Edmonton are struggling since they're dealing with a full-employment, booming economy (I've never seen so many places with such large "help wanted" signs). Quality of service did not really suffer that much, fortunately.
Rooms are nicely appointed, with a very comfortable bed, large wide-screen LCD TV, and nice bathroom amenities. The bath towels were a little small and thin for a property that claims to be a 4.5* hotel... (and overall I'd put it closer to other 3-3.5* properties I've stayed at).
There is no wireless internet available from the hotel (and no stray signals to "borrow"), and the wired internet available in the rooms is bundled with a long distance package that I have no use for (I'd either use my cell phone or calling card). At $15 per day, it's way too pricey for internet alone. TIP: there are several PCs in the Business Center available to use for free, plus one in the concierge lounge on the 9th floor. Use one of those instead.
We would certainly stay at this hotel again.

“Wonderful Beds!”

Marriott Edmonton at River Cree Resort

Aug 8, 2007

Our Family of 5 bid on this hotel on Priceline. We stayed for 4 nights. The room had 2 double beds and we were given a cot at no extra charge. All the beds were SO comfortable and the room has a flat screen LCD TV! The only thing that would have made the room better is if they had been Queen size beds instead. The hotel staff were so helpful and friendly all the time. The room was very quiet and clean. The pool area wasn't great as the pool was very shallow and not very attractive. The Hotel is set back from the road with lots of open space around. It is about 5 min drive to West ED Mall. There is a Safeway and Starbucks, bank etc. about 1/2 KM away. Although we didn't eat at the hotel we checked out the prices and they seemed very reasonable. There is a coffee shop in the lobby that serves Starbucks coffee, but is not a Starbucks. This hotel has a casino in it but it is very separate from the hotel. We loved it and would stay there again anyday!
