“Disappointing. Did not meet expectations.”

The Wickaninnish Inn & Pointe Restaurant

Our suite was in the Beach building - very disappointing. The view was disappointing.

The building is very well fitted, the suite was furnished very nicely and had all the usual amenities. The TV is in the lounge, not the bedroom and is at floor level - quite odd. The hotel does not have air conditioning and it was impossible to get a comfortable temperature for sleeping - either way too hot with the sliding door closed or very cold in the night with the door open.

The restaurant is mediocre. The decor is more like a canteen than a fine dining restaurant although the view makes up for it. The food is hit and miss... chewy tenderloin, overly-ambitious desserts, but pretty good service.

We are amazed that there is nowhere outside to sit and have a cocktail - it's either the bar at the back of the restaurant or nothing.

The fitness room is tiny and not well equipped.

Room service breakfast is uninspiring.

AND NOW THE WORST BIT....the balcony on our $650 per night suite is tiny. Measures probably 5' x 4' and is just big enough for 2 chairs. It's like sitting in a small bus shelter. It's also very shady all day long because of the trees and the structure of the building. Don't count on relaxing on your balcony for more than a minute or two.

It's a 5 minute drive to Tofino and a 10 second walk to Chesterman Beach. The location is excellent but the rest leaves a lot to be desired.

We won't return of recommend. If it was $250 a night we might consider it.

I am writing this review nearly a year after our stay in July, 2007, because this place has stayed with me. The views from our room and the property were unspoiled and amazing. The room was beautiful (as the balcony view brought the outside in) and so romantic (fireplace was a nice touch) that I felt a twinge of regret that we brought the kids with us. The room was clean and crisp and used natural materials. It was everything that I imagine a pure Pacific Northwest property should be. There is free in-room babysitting for the kids if you have dinner in the restaurant (which we did both nights and I highly recommend, though I imagine it might get old after a couple of dinners). We also enjoyed the restaurant for breakfasts with the family. I still haven't gotten over the amazing view from the circular wall of windows of the restaurant.. The hotel, restaurant, and concierge service were all excellent. The staff was friendly to the kids (and lent sand toys to the kids) and everyone just made us feel like we belonged.

As to offsite activities, Tofino is great and a nice town to walk around in. We worked with the hotel's concierge who really listened to what we wanted and who set us up with bear and whale watching excursions. The bear watching tour was your typical 25 or so people on an enclosed boat experience. For the whale watching, however, we did a private charter which was a highlight of our trip. Captain Jim (I think that was his name) had a smaller boat and was able to have it go quiet so we could wait for the whales. The trip was very pleasant in its own right, and it was nice to have the feeling of being on our on boat. Because we have three kids, the whale excursion was about the same price as the group tour. I would definitely price it out because it would never have occurred to us to go for a private charter and it was really wonderful. It would have been nice to be able to do more on the property, since there was more that interested us than time to explore it.

I wish we did not live so far away.

“Expensive, but exceptional!”

The Wickaninnish Inn & Pointe Restaurant

We stayed 2 nights at the Wick, complete with fine dining and spa. The price for us (even with a special) was a splurge. On the outside, the Wick looks like a basic 'wood siding' condominium, however, once checked in, we were in love with the place. The room was comfortable and elegant, the bathroom luxurious, and the details so exceptionally thoughtful. We were lucky to have warm weather, but, really, it wouldn't matter if a blizzard hit. The Wick has created an oasis that can be enjoyed regardless of the season. I don't want to share all the details here because part of the pleasure is in the little surprises. If you go, be sure to take advantage of the offered nature walk. Tofino is rugged Canadian beach at its best and the nature walk will add another dimension to be treasured. During our stay we ate twice at the Pointe, with mixed service (first night clumsy; second night exceptional). Both nights the food was good but not the caliber we expected at the price point (the exception being dessert which was pure bliss). My spa experience was divine with the exception of an uncomfortable treatment bed which hurt my back. Overall, the Wick was outstanding and we hope to make a trip to the Wick an annual tradition.

“Lackluster customer service”

So far I have had horrible customer service from this hotel. I am attempting to purchase a (large) gift certificate, and have been given the run around. I am quite shocked, considering this is a beautiful high end place. I phoned, and was told I needed to fax in a form. I promptly did this, even though it was terribly inconvenient for me, and was told I would get email and phone confirmation. I waited a few days for this, and it never happened. So I contacted them again, and got a story about how they have had "intermittent issues" with their fax machine. So that effort of mine was wasted, and I was back at step one (with the worry I just faxed my credit card info and signature to who-knows-where). So they then said email would be fine, so after an email saying I would send the attachment (and a response to that), I sent it. And again, it has been several days and no confirmation apart from the automated response (so I know the message went through). So I am now trying to figure out what happened to this next attempt, and hopefully don't need to give up and go elsewhere for this gift. Which is now late to the recipients (I had to tell them by phone what was up!). I was really hoping after the first problem on their end that I would have been given some extra-good service, but that certainly wasn't/isn't the case - which is probably what motivated me to share another review on trip advisor.

I'm saddened by this lack of quality in service, particularly considering how much money is involved in the purchase, because I know this is a great hotel (my parents have always enjoyed their stays there). I just hope this review, if they see it, challenges or motivates them to improve this particular service /process (advertised on the front of their website no less), because it's certainly under par for such a spendy place.

“Great hotel and location”

We went to Tofino on the recommendation of some friends who spent their honeymoon there and decided to stay at the Wickaninnish to finish our rockies tour with a bit of luxury. The hotel has a great location and the room was pure luxury. One thing to be aware of is that there are two locations that you can stay; in The Beach or at The Pointe. We were lucky enough to have a room at The Pointe (301), which had fantastic views of the coast and were quite glad we weren't in The Beach as the views did not look as good and it wasn't as private. We ate at the Pointe Restaurant on the first night and although the food was good it did not warrant the $250 bill and the staff were so completely over the top it wasn't very relaxing.

The actually place of Tofino is amazing. We did plenty of whale watching and had great walks along the beaches. The restaurants in the town are just as good as the Pointe in terms of food and exceed in atmosphere and staff. Try Shelter and The Schooner.
