“Trendy & Fashionable...I love Canada.”

My stay at the Hyatt coincided with a software conference I attended. The hotel is up the hill from the bay and it was a pleasant but sometimes chilly walk downhill to the conference location. There are lots of coffee shops, try Blenz if you get a chance. :)

There were homeless people in front of the hotel. I gave one young girl fruit every morning as I departed the hotel. They were pleasant. There is a Starbucks attached to the hotel on the ground floor. I used the hotel's workout facility and it was excellent.

The room was spacious. The king-size bed as good as it gets, everything was funky & upscale of what crate & barrel sells, it had that look and feel. The TV was a nice flatscreen, the room had a good bathroom, not too extravagant. The work desk was comfortable and funcitonal, I used the internet service a lot.

Room service was the best I've ever had at a hotel. I loved the soups and salads, especially the scallop & prawn. The concierge an reservation desk was efficient, friendly and helpful.

There was very little in the way of hall noise or evening disruptions. I slept well. The sun rises later in the morning in Vancouver in late Oct...around 8 AM.

I took a bus into the city from the airport, that was a mistake, but I wanted to get a feel for the local folks and had a delightful ride talking to two young women from Australia (sisters, one whom had just left home for the first time and was living in Vancouver...brave indeed.) I felt safe riding the bus. This is not something I would attempt in my own hometown (Central NJ.) I felt safe walking around at night.

You can hear the floatplanes taking off from the harbour. I like floatplanes, so it was not a problem for me. They are gearing up for the Olympics in 2010? So there's a lot of construction downtown.

I found nothing worthy of the slightest complaint...that is far too rare these days, but common when I travel in Canada, did I mention that I like Canada?

“dirty tricks”

Hyatt Regency Vancouver

beware. Hyatt has an UNANNOUNCED policy of turning changes into cancellations. IF you change a reservation, it will be cancelled and rebooked at the (higher) prevailing ) rate.

That is their right, but I booked this hotel 6 months before this policy was born and they still tried to apply it to me.

To much nickel and dime of the guest.

Also, the view rooms are not that great after all, so do not waste your money. I compared my (view) room with a friend's standard room and there was no difference in view. Just a way to get you to pay another 30 bucks.

“the best Hyatt I have ever seen”

My overall experience was really terrific. I appreciate another reviewer's problems with the room keys to use the elevator, which I also had a problem with initially, but that was so minor compared with overall great service, friendly staff, exceptional decor (real art and fresh flowers). I stayed here for a full week, and was completely comfortable the whole time. Even the restaurant was much better than expected for hotel dining.

I also understand the issues with internet access...this hotel like many others, uses an outside firm to provide internet access...so they really have to bill back the charges to the guest or else raise the rates. Telephone shouldn't be an issue for anyone these days either since almost everyone carries a cell phone.

I would return here any time. I loved it.

“Elegant hotel, value depends on price”

I attended a conference at the Hyatt, 2-6 April and thus had benefit of good conference rates. The recent renovations are elegant and comfortable: good sized room, good new mattress and nice bedding, wall-mounted flat TV (but skimpy boring Canadian cable package), room-darkening curtains (v. important to me), and very nice bathroom (but stylish lighting not best for applying makeup) with ceiling mounted 'rain' shower.
My only reservation is the hard to control room temperature adjustments, which are not responsive. I like a very cool room at night and thus felt obliged to keep the heat off all during the day, or I feared I would not be able to get the room cool enough for sleep. Another traveller mentioned this in his review, and it is an annoyance at a luxury hotel.
Hotel food surprisingly good, but Vancouver is very 'foodie' everywhere. Downtown location is standard big city downtown but easy for transportation elsewhere and even walks take you many places. Value depends on price.

    • Liked — large room, nicely furnished, generally luxurious hotel with friendly service
    • Disliked — climate control in room very unresponsive

“Un-Businesslike Hotel that lacks amenities”

Hyatt Regency Vancouver

Pros: Good location in downtown Vancouver. We had a renovated room which included nice bedding and plasma tv. Great housekeeping. Very clean room. Great view of downtown from our room (20th floor).
Cons: This is not a 4-star hotel. Maybe 3 stars at best. It all started with the initial check in. My wife and I had a front desk staff who looked like she was training. We did not mind that part. We did mind that she did not speak English very well. We were not informed that we needed to slide our room card in the elevator in order for it to work. We ended up getting stuck in the elevator until we figured it out ourselves. Besides that, they do not have free wireless internet anywhere in the hotel. They should at least provide it in the lobby area. I don't know how they consider themselves a business hotel. They also charged for local calls. Even Best Western we've stayed at have those amenities at no charge. Also, the plasma tv did not tell you which channel you were on, so if you changed the channel, you would have a hard time finding that channel again without scrolling through all the channels again. Something minor, but still a nuisance. The water pressure in the bathroom was also fairly weak, but manageable. The ice machines were only on the 4th floor (for a hotel that has over 30 floors), which required that you use your room card to access the elevator and to access the room where the ice machines were at. On my way to getting ice, my room card did not work when I tried to open the ice room. But I couldn't use the elevator to go back to my room either, so I ended up going to the lobby in my pajamas to get a new card. Of course I didn't have any ID on me, which made getting a new card a challenge. We will be staying at another hotel the next time we visit Vancouver.
