Staying in Vancouver is expensive, but the YMCA is not. It provides just the basics, but the location is good and access to the skytrain is just around the corner. No great views, or fancy extras but the room was clean and the price was right.

ServiceI just returned from an overnight weekend stay at the YWCA. I was part of a group of three (originally five) traveling to Vancouver from Seattle to celebrate my birthday. We were all on a budget but looking for something that was still clean and safe. The YWCA got such great reviews on TripAdvisor that we decided to give it a shot. We definitely weren't disappointed!
I made my reservation online through the hotel's website with no difficulty. I then called the hotel directly to confirm the last date to change a reservation (in case we needed an additional room). The woman who took my call was very pleasant and answered my questions completely.
We stayed in the "quint" room on the second floor. The view wasn't great (a gravel roof and a neighboring building), but this wasn't a big concern since we weren't paying for nor expecting a view. The room itself, while very simple, was clean and cozy. There were enough linens/towels/soaps for five and this particular room included a fridge and private bath. Each bed (a slightly squeaky yet still comfy twin) had its own ceiling reading light as well.
Check-in was very easy, and the desk clerk even let me go to my room and settle in prior to paying! The same desk clerk was also very helpful in recommending different stops for picking up the AquaBus to Granville Island as well as directions to the Yaletown Brew Co. for dinner (also recommended!). The hotel was easily accessible by foot to BC Place (as in, right out the front door and one block over) as well as Yaletown. We really did feel as though we were conveniently located to the rest of the city. For the coffee-addicts such as myself, there's a cafe right off the lobby as well as a Starbucks two blocks away. Also two blocks away were two sports-bar type restaurants, so nearby eats weren't a concern. We also found a grocery store and a bank several blocks further. The famous Robson St shopping district is an easy 10-minute straight shot by foot (the hotel's cross streets are Beatty and Robson).
For those needing internet access, there is a computer terminal in the lobby (which we didn't use) as well as an ATM. Speaking as a woman who loves to travel solo (though not on this trip), I was very impressed with the level of security the Y had for being a downtown budget accommodation. You have to be buzzed in by the front desk after 11 p.m. to enter the building, and elevator access to the lodging floors requires a separate key fob. I used the hotel's parking under the building and had to use TWO different fobs a total of THREE times in addition to my room key just to get to my room. Definitely made me feel secure!
With tax and $9CAD parking applied, our bill came to $118CAD for the night. Even though only three of us ended up using the room, it was still a great value for the cost. More importantly, giving the hotel our business was also an easy way for us to support the YWCA and the wonderful work they do for local women and children in the Vancouver area.
Overall, we had a great stay at the YWCA. The next time I visit Vancouver, I'll stay here!

Business serviceStayed five nights in a single room with no TV and the shower/toilet facilities down the hallway for $56.00 per night + tax. The "single" room is the epitome of basic hotel accommodation. The room I stayed in is exactly the same (if not the same one) as in the example photo for a "single room" on the hotel website (the photo with the Asian woman at the desk).
The only issue I had with the room was that there was not sufficient lighting for reclining on the bed to read. I remedied this by using my suitcase as a makeshift nightstand and placed the desk lamp on it for reading on the bed (no TV remember).
The shower/toilet facilities where always kept immaculately clean and they were always available for use. In fact, I never saw another hotel guest on the floor when I was walking to and from my room to the washing facilities.
I did hear hallway noise from the kitchen facility and fellow guests coming and going during the daytime and early evening, but nothing (not a peep) in the late evenings. Nice restful sleeps.
The efficiency and personality level of the front desk staff was on par with the basic/no-frills accommodation of the hotel... no person was rude and no person was great at providing service. They are just there and give you $56 per night service.
The hotel does have a small room that guests can hold luggage in, but it there is no bellboy service so the room is not maintained by the hotel. Guests place their own luggage in the room and retrieve it themselves... meaning store your luggage here at your own risk. I stored my luggage with no problem.
There is a small coffee/snack shop in the lobby that is good for a morning cup, pastry or piece of fruit. Also, there are a number of places to eat or have a drink nearby and walking to Yaletown and the area on Robson that has all the food & beverage options anyone needs is reasonable distance from the hotel... the area on Robson past Burrard is not as close as Yaletown, but is near enough for a pleasant walk.
All-in-all, the only other time I have experienced accommodations that are this clean and efficient has been in Southeast Asia. It met all my basic needs for a clean room, comfortable bed, restful sleep and proximity to key parts of the city.
Now if only Vancouver could do something about all that dismal rain and dark gray days! Also, I did find the food quality in the Vancouver to be mediocre for the high prices and felt that they do not treat single diners very well unless you sit at the bar.

Business serviceI stayed here with my sister for a girls getaway to vancouver. I was apprehensive about sharing a bathroom with another room. This is the only downside of this hotel. I couldn't get over hearing other people doing their business while I was in my room. Otherwise, it is a clean, well maintained hotel and the front desk people are warm and willing to help in any way they can. Overall, for the price its a great place to stay for people on a low budget.
