“Full of drunks, bedbugs, horrendous stay, ended up leaving”

Traveller's Inn City Center

Mar 2, 2008
2/2 found this review helpful

My husband and I made the mistake of staying at this motel. We were coming over from the lower mainland to attend a memorial service held at this facility, so we just decided to book a room for convenience.

NOTE --- anybody who books these rooms for more than $59.00 for a single king bed is paying too much. The price listed on this site is astronomical! There are waaaaaaaaay better motels to stay at that are in the $79 and higher range.

I haven't lived in Victoria for over 10 years, so I am quite ticked that I didn't remember this area of town was ghetto-ish.

First off, these motels are EVERYWHERE!!! Try finding the specific one that you booked at. It's quite fun (not!).

When we pulled in there were quite a few intoxicated people hanging around in the lobby (oh why mince words, they were disgusting old drunks....reminded me of the movie Barfly). I also noticed quite a few of guys going in and out of the lobby that looked like dealers.

During check in the lady (with the wandering eye) said that most people from the lower mainland steal things from the motel (!!!).

Then the baggage cart barely fit into the elevator. My husband had to take the stairs as there was not enough room. The employee helping us actually had to push the cart right up against the wall and ended up getting banged by the elevator door.

We arrive at our room, very small. I sit on the bed, ROCK HARD! I mean really really hard. I'm not a picky person. As soon as I sat on the bed I thought, my god, I just don't want to stay here. This place is awful!

We left to go out for dinner, and when we came back some drunk accosted me at the front door, and my husband ended up almost punching the guy!

It was then I told the staff that I was leaving the next morning rather than spending yet another night at this awful place. I asked them why there were drunks everywhere, they stated they were from the lounge and the bar (Sopranos) on the other side of the building. Why is there no security? Thank god I didn't bring my little girls with me, they would have been terrified.

That night the noise was unbelievable. I ended up getting to sleep, only to wake up the next morning to the sounds of a tap running in the next room.

We left and went to the Holiday Inn on Blanshard St. MUCH BETTER! Only $99 a night.

While there I was speaking with the front desk and told them my horror story, only to find out one of them used to work there! He said they have had a massive bed bug problem, that the facility is filthy, that the owner just buys all the motels up, does minor touch-ups and basically runs slum motels. He said he would never, ever recommend anybody stay there.

My aunt and uncle, who also had a room there, also ended up not staying there that night! I don't know if they were refunded or not for their room.

And, another guest of this event stayed there the same night we did, and was up all night with the noise from all the idiots in the hallway and other rooms!

Unless you like to drink, party, and have hearing aids that you can turn off, DO NOT STAY HERE!!!

I am sorry that your experience wasn't what you had hoped for and would like to try my best to put it right at the end of the day; but I must say that I find some of this review irresponsible and mis-informed.

I had responded to this several months ago; but it was not posted. It sounds like on the evening of your stay we were having some noise issues; and for that I do apologize; contrary to what is implied in the review we do have security readily available until 5am 7 nights a week. We are not in a "ghetto" part of town whatsoever; in fact we are only a block away from the Save On Memorial Center and 3 blocks from the fantastic Chinatown.

The part of this review that I find irresponsible is that we are using a 3rd parties opinion about a hotel chain that is not based on fact. I have been at this hotel for over 2 years now and have not seen or incurred 1 bedbug infestation. Bedbugs do happen very infrequently at hotels including 5 star resorts as they are brought in by guests; but again, as stated, it has not happened here during my tenure. As well; our owner provides an excellent service that is, has, and will be appreciated by many guests past, present and future. We try to make Victoria affordable, clean and enjoyable. We have won the Best of the City award 9 years straight for the Best Value Hotel/Motel in Victoria. We don't just buy hotels and "touch them up" we do major renovations and work very hard to the end of updating and upgrading our rooms on a consistent basis. Our hotel this month alone has received new pillow top beds, headboards, duvets for all rooms, lounge chairs and a serious upgrade to our lobby including marble tiling.

Our goal is to continue to move forward as the best value in Victoria striving to give you, the guest, more than you bargained for. We do operate with foresight and vision and truly are dissapointed when a guest is not satisfied and want to do everything we can to make certain they have an enjoyable experience. I understand by reading your review that you did not have an enjoyable experience and I would like to try my best to make it right and change your impression of Traveller's Inn City Center. Please feel free to contact me either by phone toll free 1-888-877-9444 or via email manager.citycenter@travellersinn.com to discuss this further.

Thank you!

“Great food and service, really thin walls”

Traveller's Inn City Center

Dec 3, 2007

Booked this room through Victoria Clipper. My sister and I stayed one night in December 2007 on a Christmas shopping trip from Seattle. We found the room small but certainly liveable, clean, and the front desk people were very helpful. They stored our luggage until check-in time and were generally very pleasant. The food in the hotel's restaurant was very good and the service was great. The tile on the bathroom floor is COLD, though, so bring some footies!

The only drawbacks to this stay were that the hotel still has single-pane windows, which not only let in the cold, but the street noise as well. Since the hotel is right on a main drag (Douglas St.), we heard cars, conversations, car alarms, street sweepers, more conversations, arguments, etc all night long. The hotel also was hosting a wedding and refugees from some tool convention, who were loud, obnoxious, and heavy drinkers who couldn't hold their alcohol. It took until 3am for security to finally kick these guys out of the hotel, but needless to say, we got very little sleep. I actually had to open the hotel room door at one point and tell two guys having a loud, drunken argument in the hallway to shut up and go to bed. That was around 1am and security was nowhere to be found.

It's a reasonably nice hotel and the shuttle service to and from the inner harbour is nice, but I think next time I'll try a hotel that caters to a slightly different clientele and has thicker windows.

“They asked for it, they got it”

Traveller's Inn City Center

4 of 5 stars
Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand
Jul 17, 2007

Actually, I can't remember which Traveller's Inn I stayed at; there are so bloody many of them in Victoria. Which tells you that they're doing something right, I guess. Great coffee in the rooms, and they'll give you more for free if you drink a lot of coffee like I do. OK, coffee's a priority...what else? I liked that they immediately responded to my comment card via email. There were a few MINOR drawbacks, which they addressed immediately, and to my satisfaction. The location was good, I remember that. Walking distance to everywhere I wanted to go.
I liked the computer for guest use in the lobby. Good for fossils like me who still don't travel around with a computer, eh? The beds were good, the TV fine, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I live in Nakhon Ratchasima,Thailand, where the price of a very good hotel is about $35.00, so I was at first surprised by the price of the room at the Traveller's Inn. But then, after wandering into a few downtown hotels to enquire about their prices, I realised that Traveller's Inn is a good value. And, they have room discount coupons on the ferry from Vancouver, so thanks for many things, Traveller's Inn!

“Convenient Location/Great Price”

Making reservations directly with the Traveller's Inn, I was impressed with the politeness and complete interest the staff gave me. That confirmed our stay. Upon arriving the over all appearance from the parking lot to the rooms were spotless clean, The employees were very professional in there duties from the front desk / restaurant / housekeeping. The restaurant has an amazing menu, good food and great prices. Our grandson partially enjoyed his "Little Leaguer" for breakfast and his "Belly Buster" hamburger for dinner one night. Pool was refreshing and our room was very comfortable. A little noisy one night but the rest of the stay was enjoyable. We had a wonderful stay in Victoria.

“Outrageously bad treatment”

Traveller's Inn City Center

Two months after the fact, I'm still outraged by the treatment I received at this hotel. I checked in using my bank card so the clerk put a $100 deposit along with the room charge against my account. I had worked hard all day and by the time I got to the room I didn't want to move again for the rest of the night. I found the room in fairly shoddy condition, with bits of who knows what all over the floor as if it hadn't been vacuumed for a week, and one of the beds was covered with something that appeared to be sand or dirt. I was too exhausted to deal with it that night, but when I mentioned it at check-out the same clerk that checked me in went up to look at the room, apparently because I had used a bank card instead of a credit card to pay, and came back to the crowded lobby carrying the sheet off the bed that I had accidentally spilled a little red wine on and loudly announced that there would be a $20 charge added to the bill for replacement of the sheet. Of course the manager wasn't in the hotel at the time so I wasn't given the opportunity to lodge a complaint. In addition, these hotels advertise very low rates, but when it comes down to it they aren't cheap at all. I stayed at another hotel in Victoria (the Queen Victoria Inn) the night before for the exact same price and there was absolutely no comparison in the quality of the rooms. The Queen Vic was spotlessly clean, quiet, and comfortable. Unfortunately there were no rooms available for my second night. The Traveller's Inn was a dive in my opinion, and should only be considered if one is truly desperate for a place to stay.

I'm sorry that your experience was not positive. I urge anyone who has not had a positive experience to contact me within an appropriate timeframe so I can have an opportunity to remedy the situation appropriately.

There are many ways to make contact with management. All Traveller's Inn's are equipped with business cards at the Front Desk that have the managers contact information. You can also fill out a comment card that I personally follow up with.

I stand behind my statement that our hotel is the best value in all of Victoria for price, location, service, and amenities. We are not by any means perfect, but more often that not we do a great job; so if your experience does not live up to those standards please contact me directly. My contact information is manager.citycenter@travellersinn.com or 1-888-877-9444.

Thank you for your comments and if you'd like to speak to me directly about your stay, please feel free to use the contact information provided.
