When my husband was transfered by his company to Sydney in 2001, we stayed for nearly 6 months (Feb.-July) at the hotel. We found the staff to be very helpful, the breakfast was good. They lady that was
assigned to clean our room, Wendy was an excllent employee and did a great job. I looked forward to chatting with her everyday. We had some BBQ on the deck and we enjoyed staying on the waterfront. I do think that they should put two televisions in the room as it was annoying to have a big hole in your bedroom wall, espically when we had people visting and staying on the couch in the living room part.

My husband, I and two young children stayed at the Cambridge Suites a couple of years ago for Easter weekend. The staff was very friendly, the rooms were clean and the hotel was quiet. If you book one of their specials, which we did, you get lots of extra goodies while you stay (gift certificates for the movie theatre, free bowling, milk and cookies at bedtime for the kids, free in-room video game...etc). They also gave the kids chocolate bunnies as an Easter present.

We assumed the hotel was quiet because there weren't very many people there that weekend, but we stayed again over Christmas vacation 2006 and even though there were more people staying, it was pretty much just as quiet.

Stayed Wednesday and Thursday night in a one bedroom suite. The room itself was nice and appeared neat and clean. The cavity in the wall between the bedroom and the living area where the TV stood was slightly annoying, and it sure would have been nice to have a TV for each room. There was a fridge but the ice cube tray did not fit in the freezer. The bathroom was a little dark but overall fairly clean and useable -- fancy Aveda bathroom products as well. The eighth floor room was nice and quiet except for when it got windy. Very comfortable bed.

The package included meat which one could barbeque on the rooftop patio. Nice idea except that the rooftop patio was a mess -- dirty, no garbage cans, and leftover lobster strewn all about -- all in all it was difficult to enjoy the cooking process. Did not take advantage on the second night.

Continental breakfest is complimentary with all rooms. It was okay. Unless you arrive there early enough, you are left with little variety. It's nice that the hotel provides trays so that guests can take food up to their rooms, especially since the eating area is very small, but this encourages 'grab and run' behaviour. Ran out of coffee. Generic joe available all day long would be nice and most likelly not break the bank. The orange juice was a step down from tang.

Would stay there again but not for $130 a night.

We stayed in the Cambridge Suites in Sydney on a Friday night in mid July. All in all it was a pretty nice hotel but for the price you pay, I would have expected a little more. The furniture in our room had seen better days. The room was clean and well appointed and yes, you do get a free bag of microwave popcorn but the movies still are not free.
Even though it is a suite, you have to share the television with the bedroom. They have a big hole in the wall between the bedroom and living room and place a big t.v there with a peice of cut out rug underneath. It's up to you to swivel it between the two rooms as you see fit. There is no privacy in the bedroom because of the big cut out in the wall plus it is quite noisy from the back of the t.v. It may seem petty but it really bothered me that they could not afford a second t.v in the bedroom like most hotel suites.
They tried to charge me for internet use which I did not use but when I complained they took it off my bill.
We ate dinner in the restaurant that evening and found the food was quite good.
We also had the continental breakfast the next morning and it was a very confusing ordeal. I think they normally have their "paying" or "hot" breakfast people seperated from us "free" breakfast people but not while we were there. They seated us at a table but when we came back with our coffee and muffin, they had seated another couple in our table. Apparently as paying customers they get first dibs on a table and we were forced to stand until another table came free. Not the way I like to be treated for my $200.00!
The hotel does sit right on the bay and the view was great. Unfortunataly there is nothing else to do there other than walk on the boardwalk because the hotel is in a pretty poor area of downtown. If you go walking, be prepared to be asked for money several times by street people.

“Loved the Gorgeous Views & Rooms! Will be back!!”

Cambridge Suites - Sydney

Jul 11, 2006

Just returned from a PERFECTLY WONDERFUL 3 day stay at CAMBRIDGE SUITES, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It’s our second wonderful visit there. ( TIP: you should BOOK EARLYas these suites are booked up really quick, I waited until just a week before to book a 1 room suite, and almost didn’t get it for all the nights we needed because of full bookings. All the staff here are so friendly and helpful, true 'hospitality'!

We had a gorgeous 1-room HARBOR VIEW suite on the 3rd floor, which felt as if you were on a cruise or boat (SEE PHOTOS). Beautiful views of the Harbor, a gorgeous sunset view, beautiful still water at dawn, and sailboats during the day. It was beautiful!!! Plus a fanatastic public boardwalk to enjoy. (if your window is open it can be a little noisy at night, so for a quieter night you might want to be on a higher floor)

The room was perfectly clean – spotless – couldn’t have been nicer. When we checked in we asked for a brand new pillow, as one of us has allergies. And even before we made it to our room, there was the service-man “John” at our door delivering it! We really appreciated the quick and nice response to our kind request. (Tip: it’s probably better to ask earlier in advance for any special requests, it makes it easier for the staff)

Our room had a luxurious king size bed in the bedroom and a pull-out couch in the livingroom area. A desk & chair overlook the harbor, with access to high-speed internet. Two closets added to the convenience. There is also a table and chairs for added convenience with the fully supplied kitchenette (the suites we have had, have a Bar Fridge, Microwave Oven, a coffee maker, a sink, dishes, cutlery, glasses and a kitchenette set-up for convenience – even dish towels and dish cloths!!!)

We also noticed in our room that Cambridge Suites has a ‘grocery list’. You can mark down any groceries you need and they will buy them for you – there is NO CHARGE for this service, all they charge you for is the actual groceries! What a great service!

We enjoyed a late light supper in the serene restaurant downstairs (Goody's Cafe) – a refreshing Greek Salad with grilled chicken breast – very generous and delicious. But there were some fabulous choices on the menu - with chefs on hand to prepare, wish we had not eaten earlier and could have ordered a main entree, as they looked special.

The morning continental breakfast was really nice (included in the room cost). Lots of choices: Lovely muffins of all types, croissants and bagels, cream cheese, assorted yogurts, cold cereals, juices of all types etc. etc. etc. We really enjoyed it. We also tried the hot breakfast one morning (an extra cost) and it was nice. Some of the hotel rates included a ‘hot breakfast’ with eggs etc. So that might be a nice idea if you want a full hot breakfast too.

For added fun they even provide complimentary Microwave Popcorn in the room! It was fun to make it watch a TV late Saturday night! (Isn't that nice hospitality? how much better can it get?)

The next day we were attending a wedding and needed directions. We asked at the front desk, and within seconds they gave us a map with a highlighter pen marking the route. We could never have done it, or arrived on time, without their kindly help! The same happened on another day, when we needed directions for the scenic route home and help to find Rita’s Tearoom. Within seconds we had a map with the route marked out for us! (this was after we had driven around for 2 hours and got lost! Wish we had asked the front desk to begin with, as once we had the map we were on our way immediately! – thank you so much to the front desk!)

Check-out time is 1:00 PM! FANTASTIC check-out time for a relazing visit and check-out was a breeze – Sandi at the front desk was so friendly and it was a nice way to finish off such a lovely visit.

As mentioned this is our second visit here and we highly recommend it. BOOK EARLY to avoid disappointment. And ask for a HARBORVIEW for added beauty and a memorable trip. (the photos we have added to this are from the 3rd floor - it was really beautiful) Although any room will be great in this hotel - for comfort alone!

As a sidepoint, If there is 1 MINOR THING about the rooms: is that there is a separate sink area outside the room with the tub/toilet. It is convenient when getting ready, especially on vacation. But the problem for us is that there is no curtain or door between the sink area and the bedroom. So when someone gets up in the middle of the night or gets up early to shave etc. – the noise and lights over the sink are so disturbing to anyone in the bedroom. That was the only thing that took much of the relaxation out of it – as it was a little difficult to sleep in or rest, if someone was using the sink area. But after awhile, to help a little, we all agreed not to put the sink light on when washing our hands, or use the bathtub to wash our hands, to try not to disturb anyone in the bedroom. We hope that they might consider placing a heavy curtain or folding door between the sink/bedroom area as they have done in some of the Disney Resorts lately (Port Orleans Riverside in the fancier Oak Manor section) after similar requests.

We HIGHLY RECOMMEND it as we loved every moment, and it was a PERFECTLY WONDERFUL visit and we will return again – we are sure you will love it! (hope you are going to see the breath-taking CABOT TRAIL – it truly is a “masterpiece” --- why go to an art gallery when you can go and see the real thing?) Also, please don't miss out on RITA'S TEAROOM - it's just not a true visit without having tea & sandwiches & sweets there! All part of the wonderful Cape Breton experience!
