“What a pleasant surprise”

Courtyard Halifax Downtown

We decided to try this brand new Halifax hotel for a one night stay and what a pleasant surprise. The rate of $109 was much less than most of the other hotels in the city were asking so I was a liitle suspicious that I would find the hotel lacking in some way. I was however, pleasantly surprised.
We had a king room on the top floor, with a beautiful view of the harbour, I woke up to a beautiful sunrise with a cruise ship pulling into port. Comfy bed, everything in the place still has that "new hotel smell". The rooms aren't huge, but the space is used very efficiently with many small but important touches. There is a light over the shower, the water pressure and shower head are excellent, the bathroom design gives much counter space, work desk uses space efficiently, lighting in all the right spots. There was a sofa bed and coffe table in the room as well. Comfy bed with triple sheeting. Mini fridge and the typical courtyard market at the front desk to fill it if needed. The hotel had a pool which we did not use and a restuarant/ bar for breakfast and supper which we did not use either. All the staff were more than helpful and pleasant. The hotel is quiet, its not in the noisy part of the city where you get the weekend bar noise, its on the waterfront. You can still walk easily to the action, but you don't need to hear it until 4 am if you wish to sleep. Overall, my new favourite in Halifax, esp. for the price.
If a may, only a few minor criticisms ito be picky. There were no plastic cups as usually found in the bathroom, only 2 styro coffee cups with the cofee machine. I had no "privacy please" sign in my room, I saw them on other doors so ours may have just gone missing. The closet is a bit small and no suitcase rack, but good enough for 1 or 2 people. Parking is valet only for $19. There are nearby garages if you wish to do it yourself then walk. Oh, one other good feature, CD playing alarm clock.

“Terrible road noise”

Courtyard Halifax Downtown

Having read all of the positive reviews for this hotel, we were not concerned at all about staying at this hotel for 3 nights. But it turned into a sleepless and frustrating experience.

The first night the road noise was so bad we didn't sleep most of the night. We talked to the people at the front desk the next morning and were pretty much blown off. When we requested that we be moved or moved to another hotel, the clerk said that everything in the hotel and the city was booked, but wouldn't check for us. She was rude and unsympathetic. I did call several hotels and they were all booked due to a convention in town.

What really made us angry is that when we made the reservation and were told that our room faced the city, the first thing I asked about was noise. I was told that there had not been a problem.

This is a new hotel - barely a year old. There is no excuse for the standard windows that were used instead of double or triple-paned. And the complete lack of concern or assurance that they would keep us advised about an available room either at this location or another was never offered.

After another upsetting episode with the bartender walking by us in the bar after we had waited about 20 minutes for a cocktail and telling us that she didn't know when she could get to us, I went back to the desk to complain. This supervisor was extremely professional and when hearing of our noise issue, found an extra room for the night in a quieter part of the hotel. The only problem is that my husband and I need a room with two separate sleeping areas (like a pullout in another area) due to a snoring problem. So my husband was kind enough to let me sleep in the extra room while he suffered it out in our original room for the 3rd night.

Upon returning home I sent an email to the manager of the hotel and to customer service at Marriott's headquarters. The response from the hotel manager was condescending and unprofessional. We had asked for some monetary compensation due to the circumstances as we paid $324 per night and expected to at least be able to sleep. After 3 emails, the manager finally offered $50! This was a complete insult. And we never got it!

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, not only because of the noise, but due to the unprofessional and uncaring attitude of the people that work there, with the exception of Kerri. There are plenty of beautiful hotels in Halifax.

“As good as it gets!”

This is a new hotel located in the center of everything tourists would be looking for. It’s a short walk to the harbor front promenade, and its shops, restaurants, and attractions. The Citadel and city park are about a ½ mile (uphill) walk from the hotel. There is also an excellent Chinese and a very good nouvelle Italian restaurant in the same building complex. Although new, the outside exhibits an old world charm. The rooms, however, are classic Marriott: large, clean, and functional. We spent three nights here and could have easily stayed longer. All in all, this is an excellent choice for tourists, providing in our opinion and overall excellent value and experience.

Awesome Location! From Check-in to Check-out we had an awesome experience. This hotel is an exceptional value in a perfect location within walking distance to everything. When we checked in our television would not turn on and management immediately dealt with the situation. It is definitely worth valet parking your car as parking is sparse. This hotel is awesome! The best hotel we've stayed in on nova scotia.

“Exactly what I needed”

I stayed at this hotel during a week-long conference in early October 2007. I chose the hotel after reading reviews here, and found the hotel to be exactly as described. The check in process was efficient, the front desk staff was helpful whenever I had a question, the room was clean and neat, and there was no noise problems at all (which I understand from reviews of other hotels in Halifax can be a problem). The rooftop balcony offered a good view of the harbor, although I was a bit timid to let the door close on me - I wasn't sure if I would be locked on the patio, but that was probably more my paranoia than anything. The breakfast in the morning seemed very good, although there is a charge for it. The price seemed reasonable, given the high cost of everything in Halifax. If I ever return to the city, this will probably be the hotel I call first.
