Both my wife and i spent two nights at the Abel Thomas House Idyll in March and found their accomodation to be superb, hospitality outstanding and the food excellent.
The Abel Thomas House is conveniently situated about 2mins walk from the mainstreet of Niagara on the Lake. The accomodation is thoughtfully partitioned away from the hosts part of the house ensuring privacy, and freedom to come and go as you desire. The entire Bed and Breakfast area is lovely. It consists of a beautiful "country style" dining room which leads to the television/games area and bedrooms via a staircase. All of the accomodation is impeccably clean, and tastefully decorated with high quality furnishings for your comfort. Something which i found particularly noteworthy of praise is the beds. Our bed was a Queen/king sized one, and did not discriminate against the feet of a superior 6'1gentleman. Hooray!!!! Frequently i find it difficult to sleep in "foreign" beds, but i slept soundly throughout my stay.
Having stayed at some 5* hotels i can say with honesty and knowledge that the breakfasts which we lovingly consumed at the Abel Thomas B+B, had a more imaginative menu, better ingredients and was executed with a devotion reminiscent of your "granny's kitchen." Superb, fresh home cooked food which you would travel far to taste (we travelled from England)!
During my many stays at different hotels and bed and breakfasts, i have always found it difficult (as a "foreigner") to feel part of the local culture. Mary thoughtfully keeps a comprehensive, up-to-date list of popular tourist activities, knowledge of good local eateries and a list of Canadian TV channels which are worth watching (a hugely sensible measure considering that 95% of the 500 channels are rubbish). Indeed she helped us with booking our winery tour, and finding a nice restaurant.
Finally, i could not finish this review without mentioning our wonderful and thoughtful hosts Mary, and Robin. If Dr.Johnson had of stayed at their B+B during the 1700s, "Abel Thomas House" would have been the definition of hospitality. We believe that the Abel Thomas House is a special place to stay, and i whole-heartedly recommend spending your valuable holiday time here. My wife and i will certainly be returning.
