“OK for the money I guess...”

Super 8 Toronto

2 of 5 stars
Ottawa, Ontario
Jul 18, 2008

We booked into this hotel as it was so close to many of the sights we wanted to do during our short trip to Toronto. We are a family of 5 ( 3 young boys aged 7,8,10) So we need a room that will accomodate us all and still give us room to move about. Our room had plenty of space for us to move around and not feel cramped at all!

We arrived in downtown T.O. and easily found our hotel. Parking is in an underground lot attached to the building that hosts the hotel. Tell them when you check in that you have a vehicle so they can give you a pass for in and out access. Our room was a good size and the furniture was in good shape. However, there is limited drawer space with only two small drawers to hold your clothes. The room was semi clean, we have a child with a nut allergy so we usually scan the room upon arrival. Obviously the family before us had small children as we found our room covered with stickers on lamp shades, door handles, lamps and even on the toilet and fridge! The floor was not vacuumed, but do they really still do that at hotels? The floor was sprinkled with oreo cookie crumbs and other various crumbs that would stick to your feet as you walked bare foot. The bathroom floor had dirty shoe marks on the tile that left a shoe imprint like someone had walked on a wet floor with dirty shoes. The hallways smelled like the outside of over heated veggies from the market stands or garbage on the streets. Am I fussy, well I guess I am but I really hate when places are listed as clean but you cannot let your kids sit on the floor to put on their shoes. I guess the part that bothered me the most was that the fridge in the room did not cool down, so the food we had for snacks did not stay cold unless we put ice in the fridge. Hmmm.

We were able to walk to most places easily and that was a sure bonus, we even were daring enough to walk after 11 pm from the Roger's Centre without any real fear of danger. Are we stupid? Probably so!

One of our little guys stubbed his toe on the fold out couch one night and I went to the front desk for a bandaid or some first aid supplies. I sat in the lobby for 30 minutes. There was no one on the desk in that time, and soon many people we gathering, waiting for a person to come to the desk. Finally, when they returned I asked if they had an alcohol wipe and a bandaid to clean up his foot. I was told that I should have brought my own first aid kit, and that they did not give out alcohol of any kind especially a wipe... and then asked what a bandaid would do for a stubbed toe anyways? Hmm let me see...clean up the blood that was on his foot/cut and maybe even take the stain out of the carpet that he made upon impact with the couch.

In the end we ended checking out a day early. We found the airconditioning very loud and we could not sleep with the noise. The Air conditioning is located directly beside the bed under the window. Aprox 1-2 feet from the bed and it was so loud that we could not even hear the television over it!

In all would I stay there again? Most likely no. I think I would spend a few more dollars and stay closer to attractions, and have a more luxurious room. However, for families that require more room, this is a wonderful place. Just bring your ear plugs for the noise, first aid kit for the boo boos, and a cooler if you plan on bringing any food needing to be kept cold.

“Good hotel even if the location is not great at night”

Super 8 Toronto

4 of 5 stars
Belfast, United Kingdom
Jul 6, 2008

I chose this hotel because of its recommendation on trip advisor and I was not disappointed. The location is a little odd: on the scond floor of a building in a Chinese shopping mall. However, once inside the hotel, the atmosphere is calm and very quiet. The rooms are spacious and clean. My single room had a large double bed with a a separate space with a couch and table. My companion had an even bigger room! The breakfast is included in the price. It was, however, a little disappointing as it is all self-service: cereal, yoghurt, toast, coffee and tea mainly with disposable cutlery. Most of the staff were very friendly although one or two could probably learn how to be more forthcoming with guests. The hotel is new so presumably the staff are still in training!
From a transport point of view the hotel is an ideal location with easy access to the tram system on the street outside. The hotel is also within walking distance of the main shopping and tourist centre of the city. The only drawback is that the whole area around the hotel (including the Chinese shopping mall) shuts down in the evening. There is no bar in the hotel so if you want to have a drink or even a meal in the evening you need to walk quite a distance or take a taxi. Unlike another contributor, however, I did not find the area dangerous or threatening at night.
In summary, an excellent location if you want to use your hotel just as a base. If you like to eat or have a drink in a hotel in the evening then I would not receommend this hotel.

“Think twice...”

Super 8 Toronto

I always look to tripadvisor to help me figure out where I should stay. I have never been steered wrong until now. I can't believe that the hotel I stayed at is the one that got good reviews from other members. The 1st issue was the location. I travel in many cities including NYC without any problem and I must say that this area made me feel very unsafe. While all other areas of Toronto that I traveled in did feel very safe, I can't say that about Chinatown. It's dirty and is a major hangout for homeless people. There were always about 5 homeless people hanging out and sometimes begging about 10 feet from the hotel entrance. At night they squeegie people's car windows (without asking 1st and then expecting people to pay ofcourse). I would always take a taxi back and have them drop me off right in front of the hotel. I would hurry in, but felt very unsafe because in order to get to the hotel, you 1st must go into a vestibule area (with no hotel staff) and wait for the elevator to leave the isolated area. The hotel lobby is on the 2nd floor. The 2nd issue is the cleanliness. I can't believe the # of reviews that claims it is new and sparkly. No way! It's dingy and the carpeting is very stained. Once inside the room, even thouh the carpets are somewhat stained, the sheets and bathroom were clean. The hotel staff was very nice and helpful. I would never stay here again.

Super 8 Toronto was a find. The hotel is in China Town and an easy walk to downtown Toronto. The hotel is modern, clean and very well maintained. Great breakfast and free Internet in Lobby. Hotel stores luggage and is helpful with advice. No noise issues even though facing main road.

For the price, this property is unbeatable in Toronto.

“A real find”

Super 8 Toronto

5 of 5 stars
East Midlands, UK
Jun 4, 2008

This hotel is an excellent find. The hotel iabove a Chinese shopping mall so some rooms look out onto this but it closes early and thick net curtains are in the rooms. The rooms are very new and kept clean. The air con is powerful enough for these large rooms and the beds very comfortable. The location is very near to a tram stop that runs along Spadina Ave. from one metro station to Union station at the other end crossing numerous other bus and tram stops. Even without the public transit most of downtoen Toronto is an easy walk away.

Superb value for the quality and location.
