My partner & I drove up to Quebec City from our Vermont home to celebrate our 17th anniversary and we stayed at this hotel for the first 3 days of our 7 day stay. Because the reviews and recommendations were so varied and we had never been to QC before we decided to split up our visit between 2 hotels.
>> At Relais Charles-Alexandre we also had the infamous room #23 and for us it was quite comfortable. We would suggest they move the closet rod back further in the huge under-stairs closet so some of the unused space could be used for suitcases, etc. but other than that it was a nice basic room. There was some floor noise from the room upstairs typical of older buildings but it wasn't too bad. NOTE: We have a travel trick to deal with noises ... we take a CD player w/ speakers or a laptop along and set it up at night with an environmental ocean waves CD repeating all night long ... we've been doing this for several years, no neighboring rooms have ever complained about our noise and the sound of the waves covers their noises quite well; we sleep as deeply as we would at the seashore.
>> The bathroom was nice & bright with a great floor to ceiling mirror covering one wall. There was generally good water temp & pressure and few if any weird plumbing noises; I would suggest that the earlier you shower, the more stable the water temperature but this is true in most smaller places more than 25 years old.
>> The breakfasts were excellent; the same choice of 2 dry cereals, choice of 3 types of oversized muffins, choice of 3 flavors of Danon yogurt, etc. and if you like fancy breakfasts you should walk down to Vieux Quebec to one of the cafes. The highlight of our breakfasts here were the best fresh croissants we've had since our last trip to France. As far as portion size, this was more food than we got at our second hotel which was twice the price.
>> We didn't have any problems dealing with the staff. All that we dealt with seemed to speak reasonable English and we speak some French and everybody was quite friendly so we had no problems at all. We reserved parking in advance and there is an extra daily change but this seems to be the norm in Quebec City; the charge wasn't that much and the parking space was very close and convenient.
>> Vieux Quebec: It is about a 1 km walk up a slight hill & down to get there, it's not a bad walk, even in the rain, and except for one day when the arthritis in my back & hip were particularly painful it was no problem at all.
>> We fell in love with Quebec City and will definitely return regularly in the future. As I said previously we do speak some French but in Montreal or Paris we have met with attitude issues in shops, hotels & cafes because we aren't even more fluent, that didn't happen once in Quebec City, even when we went to a big shopping mall; everybody was happy to work with bits & pieces of both languages to make the best communications possible and it made our trip such a joy! Finding a piece of "almost Europe" in North America with people so friendly was such a treat ! ... and when we do come back, if we are on a tight budget (like after we retire) we will definitely stay here.
