Chateau des Tourelles

I would not normally bother to write a review of an overpriced yet adequate b&b room (though with exceptional acoustics - bathroom noises from other rooms clearly audible!) except for my experience on the last day of my stay. The check-out time was officially 11:30am, but I had told my hosts that my conference ended about noon, and that I would return afterwards to finish packing and check out. I was told that this would not be a problem, but when I returned at 12:45, I found my belongings thrown out of the room onto a chair and on the floor of the common sitting area, my suitcase open, my camera and papers in a bag left unzipped beside a chair, and the clothes that had been hanging in the wardrobe tossed in a heap on the back of the chair. One of the two men running the b&b then told me that they had to remove my belongings, as the next guests had arrived and wanted the room (although the official check-in time was 3pm), and I should consider myself lucky that they did not charge me an extra day! When I expressed my shock that any businessman would treat a guest's belongings with such contempt and lack of respect for privacy, the only offer he made to compensate for this incident was to watch my bags so that I could walk around the city! Needless to say, I did not avail myself of this offer... .Perhaps my hosts were eager to please a repeat customer by making the room available early, but I consider their conduct towards myself and my belongings completely unacceptable, and this experience has certainly ensured that I will not be going back.

We have just returned from a wonderful 2 night stay at the Chateau des Tourelles in Quebec City. Allan and Marc have done a fabulous job restoring a unique heritage building on Rue St. Jean. It has a wonderful roof top terrace with expansive views of the city and surrounding countryside. A great place to sit with a beer or glass of wine in the afternoon and soak up some sun. Our room (The Annie) was a top floor corner unit with windows on both sides to take advantage of the breezes and great views. The bed, complete with down quilt was very comfortable. Breakfast was a treat, very delicious and presentation was superb. We felt that we were in a quaint cafe with the decor of the dining room. It's minutes from the walls of the old city through a vibrant neighbourhood with funky shops, restaurants and cafes, even a chocolate museum! We look forward to returning again some day!

This is an excellent property! It is on the best street in Quebec City, Rue St. Jean. Our room had windows on 2 sides which offered a nice breeze all day and night. The rooftop terrace is great for relating with a glass of rose!

Having viewed TripAdvisor in an effort find just the right B & B for this stay, we happened upon Chateau des Tourelles.

As I type this we are enjoying our third evening here and my husband has wandered to the rooftop to enjoy the marvelous view prior to leaving for dinner.

Our stay could not have been more delightful.. Alain greeted us offering easy on-site parking (this is limited but he does have offsite parking very closeby) We were very fortunate to arrive on a beautiful sunny Sunday and were immediately provided a delightful room complete with it's own balcony. After refreshing ourselves we enjoyed beer and wine (available to purchase at the store below) on our balcony and went to explore the city.

The next morning we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast (excellent breakfasts!!!) and Alian was kind enough to offer us recommendations/suggestions on the days activities. We decided to explore Chute du Montmorency and he was able to provide us with a CD that is a driving/walking tour of Isle D'Orleans (very enjoyable) He also provided wonderful recommendations for local dining. I will recommend Chez Victor , very local, very reasonable excellent burgers and my husband experienced poutine and sugar pie. (please don't miss out on this)

Today we wandered throughout the city savoring the history and look forward to dining out this evening at another one of Alain's recommended restaurants.

Rooms: This room is exactly what we wanted...comfy bed, balcony and private bath with shower. (also a tv for that late at night crash)

Breakfast: OMG!! I'm not an egg person...first morning breakfast had several options: bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon or tomato, goat cheese, pesto omelette with toast (served with a wonderful variety of perserves. (cereal is available if that's your preference) This morning...french toast with apple and cheddar and maple syrup or asparagus and cheese omlette with toast...you can't lose with any of the options.

Final note: this is a quaint B & B in a good location at a very reasonable price. Add very hospitable hosts and it's a winner.

“quaint little place”

Chateau des Tourelles

May 9, 2008

This B & B was very pleasant, albeit simple. The rooms were clean, comfortable, cozy and nicely done up. The breakfast was excellent, set up in a little cafe-like room. The owner was friendly and helpful. Though not within the walls of the old city, it's within a short walking distance and the rue St. Jean is a pleasant area to explore in it's own right. Make sure you eat at the The Hobbit restaurant down the street, it's great! Our only minor complaint was that the "cable t.v." is the most basic available, and consists mainly of french language stations... this probably wouldn't have even mattered had it not rained during most of our stay in Quebec, but since it did, better t.v. would have been nice. All in all, we can recommend this b & b!
