“Really liked the hotel, but...”

Le Port-Royal

Just back from a 3 night stay at the Le Port-Royal which we found pleasant and convenient.

I booked a two bedroom suite directly through the hotel and found the staff very pleasant and helpful. The location of the hotel is excellent. It is convenient to shopping, restaurants and all in-town tourist attractions. There is not much of a lobby to speak of, just a small reception desk and the valet doubled as a concierge, offering suggestions for dining and walking routes to tour the city. (He was EXCELLENT!!)

Let me preface this by saying we enjoyed our stay very, very much, but if you are looking for any kind of hotel amenities, you are unlikely to find it here. We enjoyed the feeling of being in an in-town apartment which overlooked a main square and we did not have any special needs or any interest in room service. Despite our central location, our rooms were wonderfully quiet and peaceful.

Our apartment was clean and airy, with excellent views of the square and fountain on one side, and a parking lot on the other. The rooms were also extraordinarily large except for the bathroom which was exceedingly tiny, but clean and functional (plenty of hot water and great pressure). We were lucky to have a washer/dryer in our unit --always a plus when traveling with a family.

Our one problem was with the air conditioning, which we needed as the temps in Quebec City were in the 30's (C) or 80-90(F) range during our stay. On check in they did not let us know that one of the air conditioners had a water receptacle in the bottom which was jerry-rigged and needed emptying every few hours. As a result, we woke to a large puddle of water next to our bed at 3am. Also, only one of the bedrooms and living area had A/C. After the spill we knew what to do, but would have appreciated being told ahead of time to avoid the mess. Also, housekeeping did not vacuum daily and I found that surprising.

The beds were very comfortable and our location was superb. I had researched a lot of Quebec City hotels and this one had the large apartment arrangement we prefer when traveling with our teens so we were very satisfied overall. The Festival d'Ete was wonderful with many free attractions and music. The fact that it is the 400th anniversary of Quebec was an added attraction.

Beautiful city, excellent food, wonderful people and a very nice hotel. I would not want to convey the idea that the Port Royal is a full service place, but if you are independent and want to feel like you live in town, this is the place to check in.

“Wedding Bliss”

Le Port-Royal

Feb 20, 2008

the rooms were modern contemporary with a touch of rustic. Storage was in abundance for all our wedding attires and extra essentials. The kitchenettes are a great value add, and they dont expect you to do the dishes. The best part of our stay was definitely the people there that go out of their way everyday to make our visit to a beautiful city that much better. From sweeping the snow off the cars, to providing many different directions with maps, to calling multiple stores for specific items, to flowers and champagne for our room on the day of our wedding. Gabrielle, Nina, Yves, Roland and Cynthia all went above and beyond. A non french speaking bride felt comfortable and not out of place in a predominantly french speaking city.

“Great location”

Le Port-Royal

We stayed here for 5 nights while here for Skate America. We were 3 women. We had the one bedroom apt with sofa bed in the living room.

Upon arriving we walked into the apt to find it lit, and beautiful classical music playing on the wall mounted CD player. We had a full kitchen and a convenient desk for our computer. The decor with the brick walls was charming. Our windows looked out over the parking lot and Old Town and we could see a bit of the Chateau Frontenac. The unit was warm and cozy and had several huge walk in closets and a large bathroom.

Parking was conveniently right outside the hotel and if it was full you could leave your keys with the desk clerk and he would park it and move it to let others out. However we weren't advised of the $15/day parking charge until we checked.

There were many lovely restaurants and shops just outside our door and the surrounding blocks, so this was a great location. There is also a Subway Sandwich shop on the side of the building and a gas station/convenience mart just behind the hotel. We made many late night raids there on our return from the skating competition for snacks, wine, beverages.

The biggest problem was the building is not well sound-proofed. One night my friends were a bit noisy and we heard the person below us yelling. The nex morning as we were leaving the desk clerk advised us of the complaint from the people below. I admit we probably were a bit noisy that time. However on our last night the clerk called up again about 10:30 and said the people below comploined that "we were running up there". We weren't. We were just walking back and forth while packing and weren't being noisy at all.The next morning my roommates mentioned that they could here someone snoring through the walls.

We had a great rate of about $145 for the larger units. At that rate I would definately stay again. However I just checked rates for a future stay and they are running 225-300. For that amount I wouldn't stay again.

“Charming”

Friendly staff, great location (a stone’s throw from the much trumpeted Hotel Dominion), very spacious – truly like having your own apartment in a lovely section of Old Quebec. I was a little worried by one reviewer who said not to trust the photos on the website. However, I was pleased to find the suite was exactly how I had imagined, although the Maitre’ De pointed out that all the suites are unique. Our “Superior” suite was appointed with a full kitchen, which saved us a meal out on a rainy night. Quebec is an expensive city, so we enjoyed the convenience of being able to cook for ourselves.

The only negatives are the $15/day parking fee, limited hot water and low thread count sheets that were a little scratchy. But a very comfy bed. As others have said, ask for a room facing the front, away from the gas station. If you like beer, there is a wonderful little micro-brewery in the same building, L'Inox-Brasserie. Can’t beat their “European style” hotdogs and a pint of lime-tinged wheat beer before footing it around town. There’s also a restaurant, Le 48, and a Subway sandwich shop in the building, but we didn’t go to either. But the prices seemed very reasonable at the restaurant.

All in all, a great choice. We would definitely go back.

“cannot fault this hotel”

From the moment we arrived and were given such a warm welcome to our departure 4 days later we were shown such friendliness. Hotel only 5 mins from station just on outskirts of Old City, which means either a ten min walk up a very steep hill or a trip up the funicular with spectacular views across St Lawrence River to get to the Old City. We had a large suite which consisted of a bedroom with ample cupboard space, very large and comfortable sitting/dining area with kitchen. TV, and all the other electrical equipment some people seem to find necessary on holiday. Cases taken from taxi on arrival and delivered to room. Despite our fears at not being able to speak much French the staff spoke wonderful English with a lovely accent especially Roland who seemed to be all manner of things from bell boy to receptionist. Any queries and we could always find an answer from someone. Local supermarket not too far and also a fresh fruit and veg market even closer. Many restaurants in the area but felt they were a bit pricy whereas their own restaurant was a bit cheaper but food very good. This was our 3rd hotel in Canada and by far the best, possibly because it was smaller and more intimate.
