Just back from a 3 night stay at the Le Port-Royal which we found pleasant and convenient.
I booked a two bedroom suite directly through the hotel and found the staff very pleasant and helpful. The location of the hotel is excellent. It is convenient to shopping, restaurants and all in-town tourist attractions. There is not much of a lobby to speak of, just a small reception desk and the valet doubled as a concierge, offering suggestions for dining and walking routes to tour the city. (He was EXCELLENT!!)
Let me preface this by saying we enjoyed our stay very, very much, but if you are looking for any kind of hotel amenities, you are unlikely to find it here. We enjoyed the feeling of being in an in-town apartment which overlooked a main square and we did not have any special needs or any interest in room service. Despite our central location, our rooms were wonderfully quiet and peaceful.
Our apartment was clean and airy, with excellent views of the square and fountain on one side, and a parking lot on the other. The rooms were also extraordinarily large except for the bathroom which was exceedingly tiny, but clean and functional (plenty of hot water and great pressure). We were lucky to have a washer/dryer in our unit --always a plus when traveling with a family.
Our one problem was with the air conditioning, which we needed as the temps in Quebec City were in the 30's (C) or 80-90(F) range during our stay. On check in they did not let us know that one of the air conditioners had a water receptacle in the bottom which was jerry-rigged and needed emptying every few hours. As a result, we woke to a large puddle of water next to our bed at 3am. Also, only one of the bedrooms and living area had A/C. After the spill we knew what to do, but would have appreciated being told ahead of time to avoid the mess. Also, housekeeping did not vacuum daily and I found that surprising.
The beds were very comfortable and our location was superb. I had researched a lot of Quebec City hotels and this one had the large apartment arrangement we prefer when traveling with our teens so we were very satisfied overall. The Festival d'Ete was wonderful with many free attractions and music. The fact that it is the 400th anniversary of Quebec was an added attraction.
Beautiful city, excellent food, wonderful people and a very nice hotel. I would not want to convey the idea that the Port Royal is a full service place, but if you are independent and want to feel like you live in town, this is the place to check in.
