Gee, I hate to be the first to write anything negative about this place, but we did have one very major problem. But first off, I do want to agree with everything everyone else has said. This is a magnificent property (note - it's a time-share, with apartments rented out when not in use, i.e., most of the time), perfectly maintained and excellent value for the money. The housekeeping staff is especially diligent, cleaning in all those corners and awkward places people usually overlook. If tipping them were a custom in this country, I'd have been very generous.
But here's the problem: our first night we got virtually no sleep because of a very loud humming coming through the wall. Earplugs, pillows over the head, sleeping pills, utter exhaustion after a long flight - all to no avail (front desk is not staffed overnight). To make a long story short, it was eventually discovered that there was a loud fan in the next room. The sound and vibration actually became worse when coming through the wall. The fan was turned off when we complained, but a staffer turned it on again later, because it's needed for heating and A/C. Off again and we were more or less OK for our remaining eight nights, but only because the room was unoccupied. (We still used earplugs to overcome the noticeable, though tolerable, noise from our own fan.) We got somewhat of a runaround from the woman in charge, who claimed she had never heard this complaint before. However, other staff members told us a different story - apparently this has been a very common complaint throughout the place. I read a tripadvisor review for another Sidney hotel that mentioned a similar problem and how the HVAC system seems to be an issue in a lot of new places.
Our bedroom wall at the head of the bed connected to the inside of the adjoining room. Looking at the floor plans of the fire escape, it seems that all the other rooms' bedroom walls are outside walls, which presumably wouldn't pick up the next guy's noise, though we heard some very noisy fans outside. Maybe there's no real problem unless you're in the unlucky room. Maybe we're just too used to our very quiet bedroom at home. But then, we do stay in a lot of hotels and manage to sleep OK.
Without the sound issue, this would easily be our top accommodation choice by far on Vancouver Island and one of the best places we've ever stayed at, certainly for the price. But hey, what good is any of that if you can't sleep? If you stay here, I suggest you first lie down on the bed and listen and make sure you don't have an issue.
