I always try to look on the bright side of anywhere I stay, and I'm definitely not known for finding fault... but the Cheltenham Barcelo pushed even me to the limits!

Despite the grand facade, the rooms were incredibly tired. Wallpaper was peeling from walls, dust piled around skirting, mould grew around the bath. The single beds in the twin room were laughably thin.. I actually had to wake myself up to roll over to ensure I didn't fall off! Staff spoke little English, and I actively tried to avoid the barman who couldn't work out how to make a white wine spritzer or a Pimms and lemonade, instead provding everything in separate glasses. Food was adequate but pricey...and rather limited for vegetarians.

How this is a 4* stay I really don't know. It really has been the most disappointing hotel experience I've had.

The place was tired looking, poor service and over priced. One room the sink and furniture was stained, the wall paper was coming off and had it a disitnct mould smell. The only saving grace was the food was of a good standard. Wouldn't stay there again.

Like other reviewers the overbearing heat in the bedroom (for a cold April day) was puzzling. The old wooden framed windows with filthy window seals would only open a couple of inches.

There were whole strips missing off the wallpaper in the bedroom (see photo) and the bath had broken tap furniture and rotted ends to the wooden bath panel. (see photo) The extractor fan sounded rather like a helicopter landing.

The bed was quite strange. Although a double I have never slept in a double bed that was so small. A large wooden wardrobe was at the about ten inches away from the foot of the bed which made passing about the room difficult.

Don't be late for dinner as the last sitting is at 9.00pm.

As the event organiser having booked around 40 rooms for the weekend I was hoping for something a little more comfortable.

We were staying in the old part of the building and am aware that other guests who were in the newer section had better rooms.

The views if you are facing the rear of the property are quite nice.

The main dinner dance event over the weekend was well presented but the prices of bar drinks and wine was more than I would have expected to pay.

Do not be fooled by the pictures - the reality is much more tired. It is an old hotel or pub that has been greatly extended. It is what I would classify as a 'training course' hotel.

Rooms are adequate, restaurant was just about acceptable although hugely overpriced (breakfast £12 dinner £27). I would prefer not to stay there again but would do so if I had to.
