This was our treat for our very good friends.
The web-site looked fabulous; very opulent, 'oldy worldy' country manor kinda thing. According to internet this hotel has helicopter pad, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow hire. It has big huge windows, big drapes, big open fireplaces, stacks of logs by the door as you go in, you getting the picture? DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. Let me list the problems with this hotel and I promise that this is the truth.
We waited in reception for 5 minutes for someone to check us in. (We were not greeted with a smile or friendly face.)
No one offered to take our bags to our rooms.
We were shown to our suites (£175 a night) by the receptionist who informed us on the way to the annex where our suites were located, that there was no water at the moment because the boiler had broken.
Our friends room was dirty. There was thick dust on the top of the headboard. Our friends room was very smelly (the windows were fully open when they arrived so I think that the management were aware of the problem with the smell) The bedspread was dirty. The curtains were hanging off the curtain rings. There was no tea or coffee making facilities. There was no iron. There was no mini-bar. There was no trouser press. The bathroom toiletries were basic and spartan.
There was no satellite tv. THEIR TOILET DID NOT FLUSH EVEN AFTER THE WATER HAD BEEN TURNED BACK ON. Our room (called Elm) was no better. I think it was cleaner but the bedspread was also stained, the curtains were also hanging off the rings, we also did not have any mini bar, tea or coffee, iron, or trouser press. Again the toilet amenities were poor and basic. The floor covering in the bathroom was lino! The telephone did not work for room to room calls, the other telephone did not work at all, the carpet was dirty, the furniture was a mis-match of cheap table-cloth covered chipwood bedside tables to scratched mahogony wardrobes and drawers with handles that came off in your hand when you tried to open them. The wallpaper was coming off the walls in places, there were old holes in the walls where pictures had previously been hung.
When we asked for some information about when the water would be switched back on, well they did not really know. The staff did offer us alternative accommodation in another of their hotels close to Bristol but as we were eating out in Cheltenham that night, it wouldn't have been sensible for us to move. We tried to get into a couple of hotels in Cheltenam but they were full. So we all went without a shower, and to get out of our awful rooms, went to the hotel bar to wait for our taxi.
Well, we waited at the bar for someone to come and serve our drinks. The bar was little more than a table with drinks on; something you would expect in a B & B (Our friends have a much nicer and more substanatial looking bar in their house!) We waited and waited and eventually, our guest had to go to reception and genuinely asked if we were supposed to help ourselves to drinks because there was no one serving . After his complaint someone then came to serve us and another couple who were also waiting. The drinks were OK. The napkins which were on the table to put your drinks on were Christmas Holly and Ivy Napkins turned upside down
We did complain. We did get a reduction in the rate but I would much rather have not had the whole embarrassing experience
Wild horses wouln't get me back to this awful embarrassing excuse of a hotel. It is absolutely appauling. DO NOT EVER CONSIDER SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED CASH AT THE GREENWAY HOTEL.
