“A lovely, friendly hotel providing a perfect stay!”

Moorend Park Hotel

5 of 5 stars
London
Jan 3, 2008

Firstly, ignore any bad reviews, the Moorend Park Hotel is a lovely hotel run by a friendly family who provide a professional, dedicated service. The building itself has lots of character and charm and our room was large with a very comfortable large bed and a bathroom that was equally spacious. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the breakfast was cooked to order and exactly what was needed before a days sightseeing in the Cotswolds. We were very pleased with our stay there and would definitely return again...the sooner the better!

Four of us stayed at the Moorend Park hotel in October 2007. It was a late decision to go and was the one of the only hotels available. We now know why. The morning we were due to arrive we received a call requesting we arrived earlier than the time we had specified as the staff wanted to go to the movies. While this did not cause much of a problem, it was very unprofessional for a "hotel".

Upon arrival we were greeted by a lovely Australian girl who showed us to our two rooms (right at the top of a LOT of stairs). It quickly became apparent this was not a hotel. The rooms were very tacky with hideous mismatched furniture and dressings. There was large bits of wallpaper pealing off the ceiling, water stains on large sections of the wall and ceiling and the floor constantly creaked. After much struggle with the window we finally got it closed, only to discover it was single glazed and not sealed at all. As our room was on the street-side it made it a very noisy night as well as letting in the cold and damp. We didn't realise until the next morning they had kindly NOT put the heater on for us. One of the rooms had an awful smell coming from the bathroom which the staff simply claimed they couldn't smell (despite all four of us smelling it) and didn't really care. Luckily later that day it went away so it was clearly something nasty in the drains.

Don't bother with the included breakfast. There was one orange for fresh fruit and some cereal. Cooked options where just full English breakfast or kippers. The fried eggs were barely cooked (mostly clear) and the bacon was so cheap and salty it was unedible. When we asked for condiments we where told they'd just ran out (every morning we were there).

The only positive was the free internet access. If this was a cheap B&B it would be ok and we would have been happy, but we didn't get what we paid for here (even by English standards). Cheltenham is an expensive area but you can definately do better than this for your money.

“Bring your earplugs.....”

I was a bit disappointed when we saw our room, the tv was tiny, the phone/radio was antiquated and grubby, the bathroom a bit smelly and we overlooked a main road - couldn't sleep the first night for traffic noise which worsened if you opened the window. The room was clean on the surface but no attention to detail and "hidden" bits like behind and under the bed. No soap in the bathroom. I asked to be moved the next night and got a much beter room on the side of the hotel, with double glazing. Large bedrooms, but only one radiator meant it was a bit cool in the room, and no heating in the bathroom.
Breakfast was nicely presented and well cooked.
This hotel has 4 diamonds, I don't think it merits 4, although it could have been awarded the extra diamond for having a bar and internet access, rather than the standard of the rooms. Overall decor was rather shabby. Beds were comfy enough, I have stayed in worse places. At £80 per night for 3 people, the rates seemed reasonable, but I wouldn't have paid any more.

“New Owners, Almost Excellent”

Moorend Park Hotel

As we discovered when booking, this B&B has been recently bought by a couple who took over operations of the hotel in July 2006, just two weeks before our visit. While it's apparent that the rooms used to be excellent, the new owners haven't been able to dress up the accommodations to a high degree yet. There is some road noise because the hotel is not air conditioned (you must leave your windows open) and is located on a busy street corner.

That being said, the rooms are spacious and decently appointed. The bathrooms are especially nice for British hotels. The beds were also good. We could choose from fruit, cereal, full English, or kippers for breakfast and all enjoyed our meals. I booked rooms 1, 5, and 8 for our group and all rooms were very nice but were missing that something special to move this hotel to a 5 star rating.

If you have special bathing requirements, you need to state so at booking as not all rooms have bath tubs. Room 1 has an extremely large bathroom. I did not see a lift, and I do not believe there are any bedrooms on the ground floor. There was adequate parking for our stay, but it might get crowded if every room was booked by someone with their own car.

We paid 65 GBP for each of our rooms (2 doubles, 1 twin -- which turned out to be a family room) by booking online instead of calling the hotel. The hotel would not match online prices when I tried to contact them initially by telephone as the new owners have raised room rates.

I'd stay here again without reservation. Recommended for families and leisure travellers.

“A Jewel in the Cotswolds”

Moorend Park Hotel

I highly recommend this beautiful, historic B & B just minutes from downtown Cheltenham.

Although well over 100 years old, this hotel is immaculately maintained. The common areas of lounge room and bar were elegant, comfortable and welcoming. The full-service bar was delightful and festive, a perfect place to enjoy a drink before setting out for the evening. The complete English breakfast was delicous and efficiently served in the cheerful dining room.

The Austrian/Australian husband and wife team who own and manage the hotel provide amazingly efficient service. I've found service in some B & Bs to be very casual and slow, but not here. The level of service was impeccable and of the standard of any high-quality hotel.

I stayed in room 3. While small, it was perfect for a single traveler. It was spotless, and beautifully furnished and appointed with all the modern amenities Americans expect.

I enjoyed tours to Stratford Upon Avon, Bath, Warwick Castle, and The Rollright Stones, and they were all convenient from the hotel. Cheltenham train station is just a 10-minute drive away.

Just two hours from London, with access to all of The Cotswolds' finest attractions, and with amenities and service to match any fine hotel, this B & B is an outstanding choice.
