I stayed at the Wyck Hill House Hotel with work and as I drove into the grounds I anticipated a lovely night's stay.
As I checked in, I was told that my room had been upgraded to a suite, so all was good in the World!
The suite was lovely - a sitting room with leather sofa greeted me followed by beautiful room with sash windows in the bedroom. That's where the delight ended.
As I settled in, I discovered that there was only one working bedside lamp in the whole bedroom and one in the sitting room (and no ceiling light). I called reception and as I was also ordering food - they said to talk to the person coming up to the room.
I spoke with him and he said 'we have loads of problems'. The guy left (I thought ,to do something about it) but he was never seen again. So I spent the night in my huge suite, sitting next to the bathroom door so I had enough light to read.
I ordered room service from an uninspiring menu. When it arrived the chunky chips I had requested were french fries and the plates were cold and uncovered - so the food was tepid at best.
The next morning my alarm call didn't arrive as requested and neither did my newpaper (all written down and discussed at check-in).
I called down for an iron before breakfast, which arrived promptly. But without an ironing board. So I had to call down again and wait for that to arrive.
I also ordered 2 poached eggs on toast for one with a pot of tea and what was delivered was 2 portions of one poached egg on toast - but with no butter and no tea. Aaaaargh.
So in summary, it's a lovely looking hotel but the service was appalling. If I were staying here for the weekend I would have left more stressed than I'd arrived. Really disappointing and would proactively not recommend.
