“Should have been much better.”

Wyck Hill House Hotel

2 of 5 stars
St Albans, Herts
Jun 30, 2008

I stayed at the Wyck Hill House Hotel with work and as I drove into the grounds I anticipated a lovely night's stay.

As I checked in, I was told that my room had been upgraded to a suite, so all was good in the World!

The suite was lovely - a sitting room with leather sofa greeted me followed by beautiful room with sash windows in the bedroom. That's where the delight ended.

As I settled in, I discovered that there was only one working bedside lamp in the whole bedroom and one in the sitting room (and no ceiling light). I called reception and as I was also ordering food - they said to talk to the person coming up to the room.

I spoke with him and he said 'we have loads of problems'. The guy left (I thought ,to do something about it) but he was never seen again. So I spent the night in my huge suite, sitting next to the bathroom door so I had enough light to read.

I ordered room service from an uninspiring menu. When it arrived the chunky chips I had requested were french fries and the plates were cold and uncovered - so the food was tepid at best.

The next morning my alarm call didn't arrive as requested and neither did my newpaper (all written down and discussed at check-in).

I called down for an iron before breakfast, which arrived promptly. But without an ironing board. So I had to call down again and wait for that to arrive.

I also ordered 2 poached eggs on toast for one with a pot of tea and what was delivered was 2 portions of one poached egg on toast - but with no butter and no tea. Aaaaargh.

So in summary, it's a lovely looking hotel but the service was appalling. If I were staying here for the weekend I would have left more stressed than I'd arrived. Really disappointing and would proactively not recommend.

What a disappointment.

Wyck Hill House promises so much and when you arrive you really think you’ve found the perfect luxury Cotswolds hotel.

But from the moment we arrived things began to go from bad to worse. And as one reviewer here has already said, even Basil Fawlty would shake his head in disbelief.

First of all we were told that we were staying in the Orangery, a modern annex to the main hotel. I’m sure it will be nice when it’s finished but at the moment the entrance isn’t carpeted or tiled and smells of creosote.

The room itself was ok and the bed very comfortable so we decided to have a little snooze after the drive up from London. If you’re a bit of an exhibitionist this is where the hotel comes into its own as the maid just walked in. No cautionary knock, no ‘hello?’ no slowly easing the door open, just straight in for an eyeful, a sneer and a ‘why didn’t you lock the door you prat?’ expression.

The moment ruined we decided to have afternoon tea. As soon as we arrived at the bar, the barman left and we had to go off and find some other member of staff. You quickly get used to this.

The spa was also deserted by any member of staff so if you need a drink, soap, towel… anything in fact, you have to get it yourself.

Breakfast the next day was a farce. Not enough tables, people left to wait and then forgotten. Dishes served cold. And if you dare complain or point out the rubbish service all you get is a shrug or a strop.

And to cap it all, my camera disappeared from our room.

Stay at Wyck Hill house and, like me, you’ll be whistling the theme to Fawlty Towers inside a hour or so. Good luck.

“The cosiest hotel”

Wyck Hill House Hotel

We didn't think that the standard rooms would be as big as they looked in the photos but they extremely roomy, clean and modern. The hotel is in a beautiful manor which looks out onto the lush valley at the back of the property. The breakfast selection is vast...full english bfast, pancakes, cereal...the works! There is an elemis spa. The staff were very friendly. Would def stay here again!

“Lovely place!”

Wyck Hill House Hotel

Jun 12, 2008

After reading reviews for Wyck Hill Hotel, I felt a little nervous as I had already booked a one night stay including dinner. However we were most pleasantly surprised. Our room was lovely, modern in style with a huge comfortable bed, a massive bathroom with complimentary toiletries, and flat screen tv and dvd. The dinner was delicious (do beware of the supplementary charges though!) and breakfast the following morning was also good. We found the service to be good and the staff to be polite, friendly and helpful. The only minor complaint I would make is that the room had obviously been used by guests with a dog as there were a few dog hairs on the carpet and now and again there was a distinct whiff if damp labradore! not a huge problem for us though may be a problem if you hate dogs or worse, had a allergy to pet fur. Might be nice if you were asked if you minded staying in a room previously used by doggy visitors? overall a great stay. Would stay again, and would recommend it (though not at the full price).

“Oh Dear”

Wyck Hill House Hotel

1 of 5 stars
High Wycombe
May 26, 2008

I believe that this hotel used to be fantastic, but on our visit recently even Basil Fawltey would have been ashamed!

The hotel and its location are perfect for a "contemporary niche" hotel, which is how the owners want to pitch it. However, until these owners sort out the sheer incompetence of the staff, they will achieve nothing more than a very expensive waste of money.

Headlines of our visit included

Heating not being turned on until 7pm!
No Hot Water
Dirty toilets
Large Cobwebs in the bathroom
Mouldy blinds in the bathroom
Dead insects in the bed!
Badly stained carpets
Access to our room through the staff changing area

Coming to the restaurant, I have alrady written to Gordon Ramsay for the service to be featured on kitchen nightmares, (unfortunately I can't comment on the food, we waited 45 minutes to have a our order taken before we gave up!)

Finally, I have never ever met a group of managers who are so expert at trying to shift blame and take absolutely no responsibility as those who supposedly run this hotel.

What a shame, this should be a great hotel, let down by incompetence and laziness
