Stayed for 2 nights inthe "Orangery". Nearly finished.....should be good .....when it is. Room good and clean and location and surroundings first class.

Poor service in bar and at breakfast ( forgot to bring our cooked order)

When we arrived the remants of a room service tray were outside the room opposite 2 days later they were stil there.

Did not eat in resturaunt felt it was expensive and lacked choice. There are some good pubs serving food on Stow.

Despite failings we enjoyed our stay due to location.

I had booked last minute for a couple of days R&R with my husband without really researching the hotel or area. After reading some reviews I was a little worried what we would find when we arrived. I need not have worried we came away with nothing to complain about . We changed rooms soon after we arrived as the T.V. was not working properly and my husband does like to watch the news at 5 in the morning when he can't sleep, but the bed was wonderful and he had to catch up with the news later in the day as he slept like a baby both nights. As for breakfast we had a large selection of both hot and cold and again no complaints about the service. We found the staff very helpful, yes you saw the same faces but with all the hotels in the cotswolds I would think that applies to many as there are only so many people to go round. We did go mid week and the weather was not to good maybe we were just lucky !!!! we would not hesitate to stay again or to recommend it to friends.

“Very disappointing”

I am rarely compelled to write negative reviews of hotels, but in this case, I had to make an exception. It is a shame that such a beautiful property in such a idyllic setting has to be marred by such horrible service, poor management, and lack of attention to detail. If I were the hotel owners/managers, I would be embarrassed by the experience given to my guests. As others have said, the hotel has a general feeling of filth and is in a state of disrepair. There seems to be a complete lack of oversight or management at all. The staff do their best, but all seem completely overworked, exhausted and bothered by any request. There are no smiles or feelings of warmth from anyone on the staff - you get the sense they are indentured servants. We had to move our room from The Orangery because it was dirty and unfinished (stained carpets, water stains on ceiling, peeling paint). Although our couch house room was not much better, we were thankful that it at least felt a little cleaner (minus the mildew-stained bathroom window/curtain and cobwebs).

We were warned about the restaurant, so chose to eat our meals out - thankfully based upon the horrendous breakfast we were served (raw, stringy bacon served on stained table linens). The bartender walked out just as we were about to place an order and then acted offended that we called after him. It feels as if Niche Hotels has completely abandoned this property and hopefully they will read some of these reviews and begin to make some well-needed changes. We would never return and would not recommend this to anyone who wanted to visit the beautiful Cotswolds.

“Should have been much better.”

Wyck Hill House Hotel

2 of 5 stars
St Albans, Herts
Jun 30, 2008

I stayed at the Wyck Hill House Hotel with work and as I drove into the grounds I anticipated a lovely night's stay.

As I checked in, I was told that my room had been upgraded to a suite, so all was good in the World!

The suite was lovely - a sitting room with leather sofa greeted me followed by beautiful room with sash windows in the bedroom. That's where the delight ended.

As I settled in, I discovered that there was only one working bedside lamp in the whole bedroom and one in the sitting room (and no ceiling light). I called reception and as I was also ordering food - they said to talk to the person coming up to the room.

I spoke with him and he said 'we have loads of problems'. The guy left (I thought ,to do something about it) but he was never seen again. So I spent the night in my huge suite, sitting next to the bathroom door so I had enough light to read.

I ordered room service from an uninspiring menu. When it arrived the chunky chips I had requested were french fries and the plates were cold and uncovered - so the food was tepid at best.

The next morning my alarm call didn't arrive as requested and neither did my newpaper (all written down and discussed at check-in).

I called down for an iron before breakfast, which arrived promptly. But without an ironing board. So I had to call down again and wait for that to arrive.

I also ordered 2 poached eggs on toast for one with a pot of tea and what was delivered was 2 portions of one poached egg on toast - but with no butter and no tea. Aaaaargh.

So in summary, it's a lovely looking hotel but the service was appalling. If I were staying here for the weekend I would have left more stressed than I'd arrived. Really disappointing and would proactively not recommend.

“Basil, Basil, BASIL!”

What a disappointment.

Wyck Hill House promises so much and when you arrive you really think you’ve found the perfect luxury Cotswolds hotel.

But from the moment we arrived things began to go from bad to worse. And as one reviewer here has already said, even Basil Fawlty would shake his head in disbelief.

First of all we were told that we were staying in the Orangery, a modern annex to the main hotel. I’m sure it will be nice when it’s finished but at the moment the entrance isn’t carpeted or tiled and smells of creosote.

The room itself was ok and the bed very comfortable so we decided to have a little snooze after the drive up from London. If you’re a bit of an exhibitionist this is where the hotel comes into its own as the maid just walked in. No cautionary knock, no ‘hello?’ no slowly easing the door open, just straight in for an eyeful, a sneer and a ‘why didn’t you lock the door you prat?’ expression.

The moment ruined we decided to have afternoon tea. As soon as we arrived at the bar, the barman left and we had to go off and find some other member of staff. You quickly get used to this.

The spa was also deserted by any member of staff so if you need a drink, soap, towel… anything in fact, you have to get it yourself.

Breakfast the next day was a farce. Not enough tables, people left to wait and then forgotten. Dishes served cold. And if you dare complain or point out the rubbish service all you get is a shrug or a strop.

And to cap it all, my camera disappeared from our room.

Stay at Wyck Hill house and, like me, you’ll be whistling the theme to Fawlty Towers inside a hour or so. Good luck.
