“Cotswold charm”

The Close Hotel

5 of 5 stars

Right in the heart of the quiet town of Tetbury, this 500 year old hotel is full of rustic charm. My wife and I stayed for two nights in room 207. I would reccomend rooms on the second (top) floor, as the floorboards do creak a bit under foot. I was glad no rooms were above mine.
The bedroom is sizeable, with usual facilities, and exposed original wooden beams. The bathroom I would describe as larger than average, with shower, bath, bidet and wash basin. There was a lack of shelving though. But this may have something to do with the age and type of the building. This made the walls uneven.
The lounges downstairs are very quiet and comfortable with deep leather chairs to relax into with a brandy after eating. It's all very cosy.
The restaurant food is very good, with three courses in the evening costing between thirty and forty pounds.
If you dont want box shaped rooms and clinical conditions, go to The Close and enjoy a lovely building with quaint rooms and friendly service. I'd happily return.

“A great stay”

We managed to book this room through LateRooms.co.uk and managed to get a room rate for half price - a great start to the trip! Upon arrival we were upgraded to a bettr room with huge bed, flat screen TV, views over the garden and an amazing modern bathrrom with huge shower cubicle. On our first night we had dinner at the Bell at Sapperton which was lovely, but the last night we ate in the restaurent and the food was outstanding. the whole hotel was well run and managed, with impecable rooms and service. On speaking to other people in the area this is by far the best hotel in tetbury. I would just say that some of the furniture in the room could have been a little more modern and the charge of £10 extra for a cooked breakfast was a little offputting, but overall a lovely break.

    • Liked — the beautifully appointed room
    • Disliked — some of the furniture was a little old

“A most enjoyable stay!”

We stayed for three nights in February and had a super time.
The hotel and bedrooms have had a much needed face lift and the new addition of the bar works well. It is also a great idea entering through the garden to reception.
The welcome was friendly with the offer of sandwiches should we have been further delayed on the motorway.
The food was very good, some of the little niceties such as canapes are gone but this did not spoil the meal.
A comment from an earlier visitor mentions the dress of diners at dinner, yes jeans were observed but this had been slowly happening before and is a reflection of society I feel rather than the hotel itself. On the Saturday evening, which was a valentines dinner, then diners did dress up and table clothes were on the tables which made it more special.
We will certainly be returning and we have since recommended several of our friends make a return visit as well.

I arrived at around eight in the evening on Wednesday 061206, and was greeted by a lovely young lady who without fuss booked me in and unusually these days (even though my room was on the top floor!) showed me to my room helping with my bags.
The room was clean and fresh and had trouser press, coffee, tea and even a fruit bowl! The bathroom had shampoos and lotions to keep the fussiest person happy and a bath with separate shower cubicle. I never did figure out how the extractor fan knew when I was in the bathroom though!?
Furniture was, within reason, in keeping with the character of the hotel. Even the supporting beams where not boxed in to ‘look pretty’.
Breakfast was cooked well, ample and not too greasy!
I had a good night’s sleep (I’m not a deep sleeper either!)
I WILL BE BACK!!

what you see on the hotel website is what you get
no more aa rosette starred food, whilst there there were complaints of food served warm rather than hot
restaurant now an eating room, jackets mingle with t-shirts and salads eaten with fingers in the evenings
continuous music playing and drafty
rooms clean, despite needed revamp
staff great
