“Very Restful Weekend”

Rampsbeck Country House Hotel

4 of 5 stars
New York City
Jul 4, 2008

The reviews of this hotel do a great job of describing what it's like to stay at Rampsbeck Country House so I only have a few things to add: we had a room with a view of the lake and it was very large, had a huge television and a little balcony.Very nice and comfy. Decor is definitely a little dated, ugly bed spread and somewhat drab carpeting but that's what you get if you stay at a traditional English hotel and is not very important, in my view.

Food is the opposite: trendy and modern. Beef cheeks abound. Everything has foam, jus or is confit and is presented in tidy little piles. This is the kind of food my husband adores and I loathe. Am happy to say the staff/chef was extremely nice about making me the simple food I love. So if you just want a green salad and grilled fish, do not be afraid to ask. The breakfast is delicious. I thought the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs was the best I have ever had.

Only disappointment is there are no good walks right by the hotel so we had to drive to Pooley Bridge (which was not far). The hotel does not provide maps but they made us photocopies from the guide books that they have. The staff is all lovely and helpful. Wi-fi works in the lobby.

“A weekend treat”

Bound to agree with most of the other reviews. The staff are very attentive without being obtrusive. We did not eat dinner so cannot comment but the breakfast was fine without being spectacular. The location is excellent, right on the shore of Lake Ullswater. The public rooms are nicely furnished and decorated and every inch the English country house. Our bedroom was a good size and also nicely furnished. The only gripe we had was that the shower had very poor pressure, although the bathroom generally was expensively fitted. Not cheap but lovely for a special occasion or weekend or midweek treat.

“Perfection!”

This really is a lovely hotel, beautifully furnished, excellent service and owners who never stop working! Walking through the front door, you realise that this is something special and that "something special" goes on and on. The location, the views across Ullswater, the gardens and this fabulous Country House.
The food was excellent and the service matched it!
If you are a dog owner, there is an excellent dog walk down to the lake.

“Great Break in a Great Location!”

Rampsbeck Country House Hotel

We stayed in Rampsbeck (Silver Crag) for four nights at the beginning of September. Firstly, we were really warmly welcomed by Mrs Gibb - which is very much appreciated after a long journey and also given that we are in our thirties and younger than your average Lake District Country House guest, we have, in the past (most notably at Gilpin Lodge Hotel) been clearly not been treated as well as other guests because of our age. The room was very comfortable and had a fantastic view of Lake Ullswater (beyond a field of rather elderly sheep!). We ate in the restaurant every night and all the staff (without any exceptions) were friendly yet professional. The food was of a high standard and the wine list was particularly good value. We hope to return one day!

“wonderful hotel”

We have just spent 2 nights at this wonderful hotel beautifully situated on the lake shore. The bedroomwas spacious and beautifully decorated and the bathroom exceptionally clean and comfortable. Fruit,wa ter was replenished daily as was the tea tray we requested. The rooms downstairs are very comfortable with fine views over the lake, The food was outstanding, imaginative and well presented using seasonal ingredients and way beyond what we had expected.
One of the most outstanding features is the staff who are unfailingly polite helpful and friendly
