“Fairly cheap, and you get what you pay for”

Duke Of Marlborough

I guess I could have worked this out, but was actually surprised that this hotel/B&B isn't actually in Woodstock - it's about 2 miles outside, so any thoughts of dining elsewhere without driving won't work.

It looked unpromising on arrival - a pub with some rooms attached. It took a while to get anyone to do the receptionist bit, but we were then taken to the room. Rooms are not part of the pub, but a newly built block to the back. Our room was quite large, fairly spartan, and with a small double bed. (Spartan - there was only one chair, one bath towel, one hand towel and no face cloths, for example). However, it was clean. The mattress was pretty uncomfortable.

Dinner (not part of the package) was OK as pub food goes. My pasta had too little sauce that was too thick, and was very peppery. The Adnams was only just the right side of off, and the 6X was only just tolerable.

Sleep was disturbed by the way the doors always seem to slam shut, and rattle the whole building.

Breakfast was a good, fairly standard "English".

All in all. Nothing too wrong with the place, but pretty basic and not in a good location. Not convinced of the value for money.

“Good and Bad”

There are good and bad points with regard to the Duke of Marlborough in Woodstock. Firstly the good - the food is wholesome and well cooked and the young staff who wait on table are cheerful and efficient - you won't go wrong eating here. There are also generous tea and coffee making facilities and toiletries in the rooms. It is well placed for beautiful Woodstock and Blenheim Palace and has lots of parking space.

Next, the not so good ... the rooms could do with being cleaner and the bed covers are shabby and in some places torn. Unfortunately, one of our pillows was damp and stained and we had to change it for one of the spare pillows in the wardrobe. The shower also leaked onto to the floor due to the short shower curtain. It is not advisable to have a room on the ground floor as you are guaranteed to be woken up by other guests going upstairs on the wooden staircase.

We found that the landlord was quite miserable most of the time and would do well to go on a customer service course.

“A really good choice”

From Rick and Barb from Australia.

Congratulations on delivering Bed and Breakfast accommodation to such an excellent standard. We styaed in many B & B's during our travels around England and the Duke of Marlborough was one of our favourites. Large rooms (we found many places that just provided tiny rooms that you couldn't move in) and well appointed accommodation and facilities. Very friendly Owners and helpful staff. A very good selection of food on the menu for dinner and huge meals. We were amused at the large portions. Excellent breakfast selection. You certainly won't go hungry in this place. We really enjoyed our stay and look back with good memories. Certainly would consider staying here again on our next trip to England.

“The Grand Old Duke”

We have just spent a long weekend at The Duke Of Marlborough Country Inn in Woodleys near Oxford. The inn is based around an 18th century coaching inn and has plenty of charm and very good quality accommodation.
The accommodation is bed and breakfast with twin rooms, double and family/executive rooms with main meals or bar snacks, served in the resturants at very reasonable prices.
The food is of excellent quality with a menu of local "home cooked" dishes, some traditional, and there is plenty of it.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious with bathrooms en-suite and ammenities such as TV, telephone and modem connection for laptops. The beds are comfortable but not too soft, and the location is very quiet at night with no traffic noise penetration so a good night's sleep can be had.
The staff are polite and efficient and nothing seems too much trouble. The manager/owner adds to the charature of the place with his dry humour which is enjoyable and not offensive.
Overall I would say the Inn is well worth an overnight, or longer stay if you are in the Oxford area.
