We, two couples, booked the De Vere Wokefield Park through a golfing holiday company for a golfing weekend.
The hotel is about a 20 minute drive from Reading, probably only 10 minutes if you know the way as I think we circled it a few times on little country lanes before we found it.
It's a nice hotel, worthy of the De Vere name, but nothing to rave about. The reception area is huge with a number of seating areas and free tea and coffee machines scattered around. It is called 'The Street', I assume on the basis of its unusual decor, but not in a bad way. The hotel must have some affiliation with BMW as there are a couple of cars and a motorbike on display in the reception hall. Like I said, huge and unusual.
The rooms were lovely and of typical De Vere standard. Nicely decorated, well laid out and comfortable - although I imagine they could get a bit warm in the Summer as I couldn't see any air conditioning unit. Perhaps if you're travelling in the hotter months, check reviews from people who travelled at a similar time.
The main bar was comfortable, perhaps a bit dark for some, but if this doesn't suit there is a smaller lighter bar just off 'The Street'. We're not sure if some of the drinks were pricey or not - the way our rounds worked out meant that we couldn't quite work out if we were being charged the same prices for drinks by different bar staff.
The restaurant was surprisingly good. There was a decent choice at breakfast, and the serve yourself cooked English selection was delicious. I was won over by the flame grilled bacon alone - that's what all bacon should taste like. The menu choice dinner was quite small, but there was still enough choice to keep all four of us happy - Gordon would have been proud. The food was served at our table, rather than the serve yourself buffet offered at some other hotels, which allowed us to relax more. The food was well presented and tasted lovely. Absolutely no complaints.
The staff service was very good, although on the Saturday evening a defensive looking manager (arms crossed, face frowing) made an appearance to watch over / pick on the staff, targeting one poor woman in particular (who incidentally was doing better without him constantly leaning over her shoulder). Under his scrutiny the staff became almost too attentive, pretty much bringing us the bill before we were finished eating.
The leisure facilities (excluding golf) are basic, and as advertised. The gym is small and the pool is for swimming, not lounging. There is a sauna, but nothing else. It's not the hotel to go to if you want to spend time lazing by the pool or in a spa.
I think the golf course was ok but I don't golf so I'm just guessing from the comments of my fellow travellers. They did grumble a bit about losing a few balls in the rough, but I'm not sure if this was the fault of the rough, or that they didn't play very well. I'm afraid I'm not equipped to provide a more thorough review of the golf course.
All in all, good value for money, and a nice break away without the hassle of a long drive home again on Sunday.
