When I booked my room in Bath, I was a little worried. I wanted to go on holiday completely on my own and I had never stayed in a B&B before. I didn’t really know what to expect and whether I would feel funny or out of place as a single girl on holiday there. I needn’t have worried. From the moment Heather opened the door and welcomed me warmly to Bath and to their house, I felt very comfortable and at home. Heather and Steve did everything they could to make my stay enjoyable, comfortable and fun. They were extremely helpful on every level. They obviously know Bath very well and had a lot of great tips on what to do and where to go. On my first evening Steve recommended this superb restaurant that was a little off the beaten track and on my first morning Heather told me about this lovely walk into the city along a charming canal. But it didn’t stop there. They were always interested to know what I’d done and how I was and whether there was anything I might need - a wineglass, a corkscrew, some milk for my tea. Heather even offered to do my washing for me because I had travelled on from another place. Heather and Steve really have a gift for making you feel comfortable and at home and by paying attention to the small details that would go overlooked elsewhere they really make your stay that extra bit special.
The house is a lovely Victorian building that was decorated and furnished with great love of detail. It is not directly in the city centre, but only a ten-minute-walk or a very short bus ride (2 stops) away - and the road that takes you into the city centre offers a lovely view over the whole city of Bath.
My room was a very comfortable and very large room on the top floor of the building. On my arrival I was given the choice between two rooms and I did have some trouble deciding because both were so cosy and pretty and - almost needless to mention it in this beautiful house - spotlessly clean (and I’m quite fussy!). The first one had a large double bed that looked extremely inviting. I chose the other room, however, because of its incredible view over the city of Bath. The room was actually a twin room, but I could rent it for single occupancy with a reduction of £ 25. Some B&Bs offer only very small reductions for single occupancy, so I was very happy to find a place with a fair deal for solo travellers.
When I thought things couldn’t really get any better, I went down to my first breakfast in Badminton Villa and enjoyed Heather’s extremely tasty full English breakfast: eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, mushrooms, toast and tea or coffee. In addition to that, you could help yourself to cereals, fresh fruit, juice and milk/yoghurt and, as you would expect from Heather, she very kindly offered second helpings and asked if there was anything else you might like to have for breakfast. Heather’s breakfast really was the highlight of the day and provided the necessary energy for a long day of sightseeing in Bath.
My stay in Badminton Villa could not have been more enjoyable, more relaxing and more fun - this was definitely not the last time I’ve stayed there. If you plan to visit the beautiful city of Bath, make sure you don’t miss this gem of a B&B - and don’t forget to say Hi from Marianne!! :-)
