Seeing the website photos of a large Georgian mansion and wishing to stay somewhere with 'character' the Bailbrook Hotel looked great. A phonecall later and I was booked into a kingsize room. Upon arrival, however, I (and my three other staying guests) were very disappointed. I was told it was in walking distance of Bath town centre - - it is not; and the walk is along a very busy road and crossing a duel carriageway it was not particularly safe (for children) or pleasant. The reception of the hotel looked fantastic, but following booking in, we were led down corridors, out of the nice Georgian building, across a courtyard, into a modern block (that looked and felt like a University Halls of Residence, and along thin, characterless corridors to out rooms. We were all very disapointed. I later found out that all the rooms are in this modern block. If this is stated on their website, it is not clear. The rooms were clean and service was good, but I felt cheated in that what you see on the website is not what you get. I told the management, but they merely shrugged their shoulders. Next time I will ask a lot more questions, but will not stay at the Bailbrook Hotel again (but please do not confuse this with the Bailbrook Lodge which is a separate hotel next door - although I do not know what this is like). It is also clearly geared up as a conference centre for business men - and not really a special hotel for a nice weekend break. Next time I will seek out a hotel IN Bath itself.
