We travelled from NJ, USA for my daughter's wedding to Auchen Castle, August 12, 2007. We will forever be greatful to Claire, Heather, Mourat, Kris, Mike and the entire Auchen Castle entourage. They performed a most outstanding job--PERFECTION, PROFESSIONALISM, THE ROYAL TREATMENT!! This is what we got @ Auchen Castle. The rooms were sumptuous with magnificent garden views. The food served was outstanding gourmet quality. The breathtaking views, the gardens, are marvelous and provide a perfect wedding picture background. This has been the greatest experience my family has ever had. We plan to go back to spend more time and explore the castle in its entirety, since there are some 30-40 acres to explore. Our most sincere thanks to the entire Auchen Castle entourage- you made it happen!!

“What a fabulous day!”

We had our civil partnership ceremony at Auchen Castle on 2nd September 2007. From the minute we arrived, we were made to feel very special.

From the front of house to the bar staff to the wedding co-ordinator, Heather, we and our group were made to feel like we were the only people in the castle and nothing was too much trouble.

The food was excellent, we were all stuffed - even the vegetarians and gluten-free requirements surpassed expectations.

Our bedroom was very lovely and the bed was very comfortable. I shall not say any more!

We had such a wonderful day and have written in Auchen Castle's guest book to express our sincere thanks. I decided to write about our extremely positive experience on here because I'd read so many negative comments on this website, I was terrified that the best day of our lives would be ruined. I am so pleased to say that this was not the case.

Thank you, Heather and the team at Auchen Castle.

“Our Perfect day”

My new wife and I, were married at Auchen Castle on Saturday 25th August 2007. From the moment we arrived on the Thursday to when we left on the Monday, we were treated like royalty by all the staff. Having read reviews on this site, we had our concerns, but in all honesty most of these comments, we found them to be in our opinion, completely inaccurate because Auchen is the best hotel in the border region.

From the moment we were met by Wedding co-ordinators Claire and Heather, everything was perfect. The head chef Pat is a genius with a menu; everyone of our 80 guests commented on how fantastic the food was. The bar staff headed by Tom were so friendly, that nothing was a problem. Paul on reception is a true gent and solved any issues with the minimum of fuss, and the lovely Petra ensured we were met with a smile at breakfast each morning.

The wedding day itself was perfect. Murat was in charge of the day and I owe him a world of thanks, he made sure our day was perfect and everything ran smoothly - thank you my man, you are a star.
As a general comment all of the staff excelled themselves and provided a superb level of service for the whole weekend.

Thanks go to Jeff for the amazing bird display on the Friday, all of the kids had a great time.

There were a lot of comments about expensive drinks, but is £3 for a pint dear? and the fact you only get doubles in your spirits makes £5 a shot a little expensive but not outrageous.

To put some context on the review, the hotel isn't perfect - what hotel is, but if you are looking for a private castle, in amazing surroundings with out of this world food and staff, auchen is the place to book.

My husband and i got married at auchen castle on the 9th aug 2007, i wanted to write a review on here as after we had booked the wedding i came to this site only to be worried out of my mind about all of the reviews saying how awful the castle was, all i can say is "what a load of rubbish!!!" there is just no pleasing some people! We had the happiest and most fantastic day of our lives! The rooms were lovely, the service was excellent (staff so friendly and helpful) and the grounds were just stunning. The decor is gorgeous with high ceilings and drapes, beautiful carpets and furniture.
The food was delicious, this was agreed by every single one of our guests and it was so well presented my mum wanted photos of it! the drinks are pricey but it's to be expected in all good hotels nowadays.
I just want to say that thanks to auchen castle we had the PERFECT wedding day and we couldn't have wished for more.

“a dreadfull experience”

Auchen Castle Hotel

Me and my husband to be visited auchen castle last october with a view to booking our wedding here,At first we were quite exited and although the castle looked a bit tired and could have done with sprucing up a bit we did not let this put us of as the gardens and outer building were really nice.
We made an appointment with one of the wedding coordinators and took a look at a few rooms in the castle,
The first thing we noticed was the rooms were a bit cold and damp and had not been cleaned
we were told the cleaners had not got round to doing the castle rooms yet and there was a refurb going on and all bathrooms were being refitted by the end of the year along with new decor and new carpets,
Apparrently the heating system was on the blink and this was being sorted and we did not need worry as we would not be holding our wedding for another six months.
We decided to pay our £600 deposit and booked our wedding We drove home and talked all the way back about our wedding plans it was a great feeling,
We had nagging doubts about the decor rooms etc but Jamie the wedding coordinator had convinced us everthing would be different come the new year.
We went back in february to pay a further payment and to finalise our wedding day,
It makes me feel like crying just typing this part of the review,
The place was exactly the same damp rooms, cold dirty bathrooms, same carpets same decor and different staff some who had a real difficulty speaking english, no doubt being paid a lot less than they deserve,
Jamie made no appology and said the refurb had been put back,
We asked to speak to the owner Mrs Skinner but she refused to see us,
We asked for our £600 deposit back but they flat refused saying we had seen the hotel when we paid it and if we were not happy we should not have parted with our money,
They have since billed us for the registry and the final payment and this has been sent back to Mrs Skinner asking her for a full refund,
She has got one of her staff to ring us to say we will be taken to court if we dont pay in full within the next 14 days.
I hope this does go to court so we can stop this happening to others.

Management Response

In response to the above review, I can categorically state that no such scenario is taking place between Auchen Castle and any customers who have cancelled their event with us. Jamie, has not worked at this hotel since late last year, and therefore cannot possibly have had conversations with guests in February of this year. Our bedrooms are all furbished and cleaned to a high standard (hence our recent upgrade to Four Star by Visit Scotland), and our heating is extremely reliable. Having checked the dates in question and the name, I can find no record of a cancelled wedding which would correspond with these details.
