I recently visited St Andrews for a friend's wedding. Due to the high number of weddings taking place that weekend, the start of the 'tourist' golf season and an R&A dinner, hotel rooms were in short supply. After eleven calls resulting in "sorry we are full", I reserved a room for myself and my girlfriend at the Albany Hotel somewhat reluctantly, bearing in mind the £130 per night price tag for a double room.... On checking in, we somewhat surprised that the tired interior didn't match the pictures of the residents lounge (tiny) on the website. Furthermore, rather than being welcomed at check in, we were met with barked orders (breakfast on a Sunday 07:15 to 09:15 and check out was 10:30!!!) and room cleaning blocking the landings. The bedroom was old and tired, with a tiny double bed and an aged mattress. It was also cold and damp, despite the warm day outside. The bathroom was unsuitable for those over 180cm, had a peeling lino floor, an electric towel rail come radiator that wasn't even attached to the floor and a shower that dripped. Forget decent toiletries, fluffy towels and bathrobes. In a small regional town one expects a decent room, a good level of service and a tasty breakfast for £130.00 per night. This hotel is a glorified B&B of the old school variety (i.e. 'hot and cold running water') only qualifying as a hotel I imagine by virtue of its trouser press and hair dryer. I was thoroughly unimpressed and disappointed.
