“Watch out for Room 120!!”

Best Western Glasgow Pond Hotel

Was in Glasgow for a concert at Hampden Park. Stayed here as hubby wanted somewhere safe to park his car.

We were booked into room 120 - the front of the hotel. Right beside the fan extractors ..........!! Got back to the hotel around midnight and tried to sleep - the noise from outside the window didnt help. At 3am I had enough and went down to reception - the guy was kind and switched off the extractors. Ahhh peace perfect peace and sleep came at last!!

As for the room, it was nice, big, clean and hubby loved the LCD tv!! No biccies but plenty tea, coffee things. Asked for more milk and got a bundle - no problems.

If you go to the car park, up the stairs to M&S, you get a bus across the road to the centre of Glasgow. We got the "East Kilbride" bus and it was £1.30 per person for a single fare. The taxi at night was £6.80 total.

Breakfast is a buffet self service thing. It was busy and I saw people going for for a few servings, so management dont limit you to one helping!!

“Excellent”

Best Western Glasgow Pond Hotel

Chose this hotel because it accepted dogs, previous experience of such hotels has been either a poor room or a surcharge, not so here. Stayed with my wife for two nights in a good sized room, largish multi channel LCD TV was appreciated. The staff were excellent as was the general appearance of the room and communal areas. I believe the whole hotel has now been refurbished, negating some of the earlier criticisms of it's appearance. Had evening meals on both nights which were well prepared and presented. A self service cooked breakfast was included in my booking though I understand there is sometimes a charge for this depending on the booking offer.
The hotel is situated on the main road between the city centre and Dumbarton, the centre is ten minutes away by car, I didn't find it noisy as one reviewer experienced. There's a large ornamental lake outside for either a pleasant evening stroll or a decent dog walk. En route to the city, five minutes away, is the Botanical Garden which is worth look ing in on. In all a pleasant and hassle free experience.

“Too warm (and too expensive!)”

Best Western Glasgow Pond Hotel

We stayed here for 4 nights in May 2008 and while the hotel was clean throughout (which was our most important consideration) the food was only average and overpriced. Drinks were even more expensive (eg £5 for large glass of house wine and £3.35 for pint of Guinness). But the biggest problem was the heat - There is no air conditioning in bedrooms (only in some public areas) and despite it only being May the heat was almost unbearable. I dread to think what it's like in mid-summer!! All in all this is an OK hotel but I would only go back in winter (and eat/drink elsewhere).

“Good Hotel, but understaffed kitchen”

Best Western Glasgow Pond Hotel

May 21, 2008

Spent one night here. The room was very good and clean and as was the whole hotel. Staff were friendly and helpfull. They have dropped a mark though. When I went to the restaurant for my 8:00pm booking, I faced a room with only half the tables in use but was told I would have to wait 20 minutes for my table! They need to get more staff in if they can only cope with a dozen tables at a time.
Breakfast was a perfectly good buffet affair.

“Beauty comes from within...”

I saw a weekend 2-4-1 deal on the hotel's own web site. £45 per room (for 2) per night with breakfast. I web-shopped around a bit and got it down to £42.50 but ended up having to phone the hotel to confirm, as the other site was tricky to use and often not working. (Not TripAdvisor!) All was fine, though. But no refunds or date changes at those rates !
HOTEL OUTSIDE - a 70s concrete slab, but don't let that put you off. They have tried to smarten it up with bolted-on extras and plants. The big plus (on a sunny May weekend) was that it overlooks a small lake (not a tiny pond!) which can be walked around in 10 mins. It's a public lake, but not crowded. 1 or 2 picnic benches. 2 pairs of swans, many ducks etc. See pix. One side of the hotel has mainly side views of the lake. The other side overlooks the next-door large hospital buildings. Slight prob for some may be that ambulance sirens can be heard at any time, day or night, for obvious reasons. Double-glazing would cut that out, but there is no aircon in the bedrooms and it would be very hot in summer. There is aircon in public areas. There is a petrol (gas) station and an XXXXX & XXXXXXX (part of a well-known chain store that also sells food and has coffee shops in its stores) - TripAdvisor does not like brand names mentioning) food-only store backing onto the hotel car park near the main door. Ideal for last-minute snacks / sandwiches or drinks / wine. The hotel bar will happily give you a bucket or pint glass of wine. I think this is open 24-7 as they say.
HOTEL INSIDE - all rooms I am assured are completely refurbed.See pix. Trendy styling everywhere, with the 70s retro feel 'skinned over' with a new 2008 70s retro style ! That's good !
King size bed slightly hard. No aircon in bedrooms, as mentioned above. Not a prob in May, though. Big bathroom (with bath as well as shower!) Public rooms / restaurant all super-trendy in earth tones (hey, I've become a TV designer!) ,browns and lime greens (bedrooms are browns and reds).
Breakfast very good, typical hotel buffet (hot or cold) self-service style. Coffee from machine, but reasonable machine with espresso etc etc etc. Good staff, too - plenty of room to sit, tables cleared quickly, no making you sit where THEY wanted you to sit. (Hotel only half-full, though, I estimate, as it's a big place.) Did not try restaurant food. Bar - I think Stella was c.£4 per pint and Hoegaarden c.£5 a pint. A bit pricey. I think the bar shuts quite early (11pm?) with cash only after 10pm, even for residents (?). All in all, very pleased. Would def return at that special weekend deal rate.
Notes - free parking - worth its weight in gold in Glasgow. Bus stop 2 minutes away - hotel is pretty near a main road, and is near the fancy West End of Glasgow, with Byers Road / Ashton Lane 15 minutes-ish walk away. Bus ride to city centre (1.5 miles?) about 85p single. Much less hassle than finding city centre parking. Taxi about £6-7.
Hope that helps !
