“Great place!”

Neptunes Hostel

May 11, 2008

We had a triple room with a public bathroom. The room was small, but adequate. The beds were more comfortable than the ones in the Best Western we stayed in the next night! The bathrooms were clean and had plenty of hot water. The showers were a bit odd because you pressed a button to turn them on and the water ran for about 30 seconds, but I can't blame them for trying to save water. There are plenty of stores and restaurants nearby so we didn't use the kitchen at all, but it seemed nice. There was one pubic computer that could be used for free which was very convenient. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and attentive to our needs. The only downside was that it was VERY hard for us to find so I would recommend getting detailed directions beforehand if possible.

Stayed for four nights - planned for two. This hostel is awesome. The staff could not do enough to help with absolutely anything, the rooms are extremely cheap and really good value for money, the cleanliness was of a high standard and the overall experience was a very pleasant surprise.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The level of cleanliness and the unexpected extras
    • Disliked — The noise on weekends - typical for a hostel. Also, only one internet, but it is free!

We stayed there for 2 nights and had booked a double bed with shared bathroom. Our room was located in a small building right outside the actual hostel, it was very basic but clean and welcoming. The only snag was the pub right below our window, try to get some sleep until very late. Otherwise it's worth the money.
The hostel should definitely buy a few more computers (even though their only computer was always free during lunchtime). The kitchen is a bit dark and not always clean, but this is mainly due to people's carelessness

“Good for an overnight stay”

Neptunes Hostel

3 of 5 stars
England/United States

This is one of the best hostels I've personally ever stayed in. My boyfriend and I needed a place to stay in Killarney for just one night, so we needed something affordable, basic, and clean. Neptunes fulfilled that wish and exceeded expectations.

For us, this hostel was very difficult to find. We arrived by car to Killarney at night (pretty late) and drove past it probably three times. It's down a somewhat disguised alleyway with a only small sign at the opening of the alley directing you (this is due to local sign ordinances, not the hostel's fault). We called the front desk and the night porter came out to the main road to flag us down, which was great.

Mike, the owner of Neptune's, is very helpful and accommodating.

We reserved a double with a shared bath, but when we arrived we found they had bumped us up to a double with an ensuite bath. That was great! The one drawback was that our room seemed to share a wall with the common room, which always had people in it, but this wasn't a problem for one night.

The bedrooms are very stripped down with only a bed, a stool/chair, and a radiator. Our 'bed' was a slightly uncomfortable futon. When we showered, water would flood onto the bathroom floor and then out into the bedroom through the doorway. It wasn't a big deal, but you couldn't always see if there was water on the tile floor in the bathroom, so we slipped occasionally. Otherwise, even though the decor and rooms are extremely basic, the hostel is relatively clean and comfortable.

There is FREE(!) internet on one computer, but it seems like you might have to fight for it -- one guy staying there seemed to be on it from before we arrived to right before we left. There's also free wireless internet if you have a laptop with you, which we thought was pretty cool even though we weren't carrying one with us.

Breakfast looked okay, though we went to a restaurant for brunch. Neptunes also has a kitchen and a dining room available 24 hours a day for its customers' use. If we'd stayed any longer than a night, we probably would have used it.

The main 'problem' is parking, as you must park at a nearby church, which is about a five minute walk from the hostel (going back to the hostel is uphill); however, there was ample parking available and it was free.

Neptunes arranges tours of the Kerry peninsula for its guests. We didn't need a tour since we had a rental car, but we were able to grab a map from the front desk and given a couple 'must-see' destinations.

The staff was friendly. The hostel is also in an excellent location for wandering around Killarney if you so desire. There was also a bar/cafe right across the alley from the hostel, but it wasn't open (it was a Monday or Tuesday). We were literally at the Neptunes Hostel for only ten hours, but we felt the low cost in the middle of town was a very good deal for a one or two night stay.

“A nice surprise”

Neptunes Hostel

When we decided to go to Killarney from Cork, Ireland, we had no place to stay and were traveling by bus so the hostel, on the map we had, caught our attention. We are quite grown up and had never stayed in a hostel. The Neptune Hostel, if you make reservations in advance, has private rooms with full bath, laundry service, was clean, has free internet (not a small thing in Europe), has a kitchen where you can make your own food and store it, is right in town and the staff is wonderful. My husband is on a special diet so it was helpful when we could just shop and eat our own food. The instant hot water machines were great for tea and cocoa. The location is right in town with shopping, restaurants, pubs within easy walking distance.

The first night the hostel was filled with cyclers from France so we had could not get a private bath and had to use the bathroom down the hall. It was clean, bring your own soap, but not that convenient for older adults who may want to use it during the night. When we arrived, Mike, the manager carried our luggage, without our asking, up the two flights of stairs. When we opened the door to the small room with bunk beds, he grabbed the luggage and moved it across the hall into a room he thought would be better for us. It was a nice room with good beds and good lighting. The next day we had reservations for a room with private bath. He told us to leave our packed luggage and he would move it. We went on the Ring-of-Kerry tour and he carried the luggage down the two flights of stairs into the newer buiding, up two flights there. That night we had a large family room with four beds and a large, clean bathroom with very good shower. There are no outlets, however, in the rooms where we stayed and one has to use to outlet in the hall. A small inconvenience. it isn't the Queen Mary, but it is an adventure, and is a different experience. One meets young people who are traveling around Europe and that was fun. The young people working at the hostel, Mike, Jillian, Nikky, couldn't have been nicer had they been our own grandchildren.
The tour bus for the Ring of Kerry sent a shuttle to pick us up right from the lobby. The cab to the bus/train station was 5 euros, a little higher than the kids told us it would be, makes one wonder if they have different rates for older adults. When we arrived I asked the woman at the bus station where to get a cab and she just called one for us. Do have a breakfast sandwich at the bus station, it will hold you until dinner. As we waited for our cab this man pulled up and said he was "Tony" a cabbie with a cab in repair and transported us in his private van....he may not have been a cabbie but but he was polite, helpful and charged the same as the cab driver when we left the hostel. .
