I visited Tralee in December 2007 and while I did not stay at the hotel, I did dine in the hotel bar on two occasions. The hotel bar is a popular venue for 'pub grub". My first visit was for dinner and while the food was tasty, the service was poor. One waitress took my order, another dropped off the food and I had to flag down another to pay my bill. Obviously this reflects chaotic service and lack of supervision by management.
My big gripe however, occurs from when I had morning coffee there.
I sat at a table for 2 close to the door. I ordered a coffee. I choose this location as I wanted to access the WiFi service offered by Eircom, so I duly powered up my laptop and went about my business. About 15 minutes later I noticed the Hotel Manager speaking to the waitress/hostess, and they were both looking in my direction. A few minutes later she approached me and asked me if I would mind moving to the lobby as they had people waiting to have lunch. I obliged and gathered my belogings. I asked her to bring me another coffee. When I got to the lobby I saw that there was no table available....for some silly reason, I had presumed they had checked that before they asked me to move. I had to share a table with another gentleman. Needless to say I felt a bit duped. The hostess arrived with the coffee and ** this is what really upsets me**, she asked me to pay for both of my coffees even though I had not asked for the check. When I complained that this was an insult she simply said it was the hotel policy that any food or drinks ordered in the lobby had to paid for on the spot, obviously forgetting why I was sitting there in the first place.
If anything, she should have bought me the second coffee as a gesture of goodwill for moving at her request. I was not looking for a free coffee (only 2.50 each anyway), but being asked to pay because they did not trust me to pay later was just a cheap and cheesy insult which reflects the attitude of the management of this hotel. I say that because the Hotel Manager was fully aware of the interaction and made no effort to apologize.
So although they have some arrangement with Eircom who promote a wireless hotspot there, be warned that you may not be welcomed in their bar with your laptop!
