We came to Berchtesgaden for one day in mid-October to go on the Eagles Nest tour (given by Eagles' Nest Tours, and I highly recommend it). When I saw the outside of the building I was a bit skeptical; however, when we saw our room we fell in love with it. It is not what you would expect in an American hotel. I guess I would call it Bavarian :) Nonethless, the room was very clean with a modern bathroom. The room was the biggest we had in our 2 weeks in Germany/Austria. It had a double bed, a sitting area with a couch and TV that was separated from the bed area by a curtain, and the shower was in a different room than the toilet. We also had a balcony that faced the mountains. We had dinner at the restaurant attached to the hotel and absolutely loved it. In the morning we walked left out the front door around the corner (and over to the opposite side of the street) and had a great little breakfast at a bistro that has windows facing the mountains. We paid about $135 USD for a double room . We thought it was worth it. Also, we booked the room over the phone (after initial contact through their website) since Hotels.com said there weren't any rooms available.
Getting there:
We arrived in Berchtesgaden by train. I had mapped out how to get to the hotel from the train station on foot using Google maps but it had us taking a somewhat circuitous route. The Eagles Nest tour guide gave us the scoop on how to get there more directly. If you exit the train station facing the town center, walk to your right toward the other end of the train station. There should be a stairwell that goes back up into the train station. Go up those stairs until you get to a pedestrian bridge that takes you back over the train tracks and to the shops up the hill behind the train station. We were dragging a moderate amount of luggage so it was a mild workout getting up the hill. At the top of the path you'll be behind some small businesses. Hang a right walking behind the businesses until the path reaches the street level. As you reach the street level the hotel should be just across the street. Not too bad if you can hack a little workout :)
