First of all, let me clarify that there are two hotels in Munich by that name. They are located barely 50 m from each other and connected by a passage leading past the entrance to the Deutsches Theater (German Theatre, the great place if you love musicals). We stayed at the 4-star Deutsches Theater hotel on Schwanthalerstrasse 15, which is also known as Deutsches Theater Mitte (i.e. Downtown) Hotel; its counterpart on Landwehrstrasse 18 has the same name but only three stars. The hotel is a tad farther from the railway station than other three-star hotels and the neighbourhood is much nicer – no strip bars or sleazy places. It is only three to five minutes walk away from the Karlstor, the entrance into the Munich intramuros. The hotel is excellent, especially for the price we paid. We made the reservations through its own web-site and it cost us 69 euros a night in the Easter week-end. Our double room (no. 206) was spacious, it faced the inner courtyard and the theatre entrance. It was immaculately clean, the bed was soft and warm, the bathroom was very neat and there was even a hairdryer. It appears that the hotel was recently renovated. The breakfast was excellent, too – a wide choice of eggs, sausages, cheese, muesli, honey, jams, etc. I dare to say that everything was beyond reproach. It is true, as the previous user mentioned, that the reception was closed in the night time, but we did not find it much of an inconvenience because they provided us with a key to the back entrance and we could carry it with us.

This is a great non-chain hotel in the historic centre of Munich. It feels like a home from home. It is hard to get a room at most weekends as German families stay here when on shopping trips. Look for it on fine-time.com. They have a good italian restaurant in the lobby.

There are alot of 3 star hotels right around the train station in Munich - the Deutches theatre downtown is a 4 star just a 5 minute walk to the station. we met some friends staying in a 3 star across the street - our room was much larger, the bathroom was nicer, however we were under the impression that there was air conditioning - which there isn't. the staff ( one person at a time) were always pleasant and ready to help, and the breakfast was free and quite good. one problem we had was that the doors to the reception lock after midnight - both from the outside and the inside, and the staff goes home. You can still get inside by another entrance with your key, but if there is an emergency, things can get a little scary.If this were a 3 star hotel, it would be the best in town - I just figured a 4 star would have 24 hour reception. on the positive side, if you book with the right service, it can be as inexpensive as the other 3 star hotels in the area. let's call it 3 and half stars.
