“Modern, clean and secure”

I have stayed at this hotel in early December for 2 nights with my husband and a group of friends. The first impression was really positive and inside the hotel looked more like a 4* than a 3* hotel.

The check-in was smooth and the reception staff spoke good English.

Our double room was very clean and seemed recently refurbished. The decor was minimalist but we didn't mind. The downside was a lack of a minibar and a safe. Also, we realised that instead of a double bed there were 2 twin beds pushed closely together.

The hotel's bar was great, small and intimate but with a good choice of snacks and drinks. It was modern but inviting and the staff were lovely.

The breakfast buffet was so nice with a variety of hot and cold food. We loved the tea and cake selection, too.

The hotel is a short walking distance from an underground station and within an easy reach of a Townhall and a major shopping district. We walked few times to the town centre. It takes about 25 minutes and the best shortcut leads through a well maintained near-by park.

Hamburg has fab Christmas markets and good restaurants. Overall, it was a really enjoyable stay.

We stayed at the Dorint/Mercure an der Messe for three nights in May, 2006. It has a great location across the street from the Planten and Blomen. We never once had to use the underground/s-bahn as all of central Hamburg was a pleasant and easy walk away (approx 35 mins to the Hauptbahnhof, 45 mins to Speicherstadt, 20 mins to the Rathaus). The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were new and clean, and the breakfast was somewhat expensive but excellent. At a rack rate of 89 Euros/night it was a bit overpriced, but if you plan ahead and don't run the risk of having to cancel your reservation, try to get an internet rate where rooms can run between 60 and 70 Euros/night. If you can get a good rate, the Dorint/Mercure an der Messe would be excellent value.

A great hotel situated on the outskirts of Hamburg, easily within walking distance to hamburg city centre. The room was compact but was bareable. The staff were extremely helpful and were always willing to give tourist advice. We enjoyed our stay in the hotel but weren't as keen on the city itself
