Just back from Venice with an 18 and 23 year old. We stayed at this wonderful hotel directly on the Grand Canal and just 500 yards from Piazza San Marco for 2 nights and enjoyed every minute. Locanda Vivaldi has it's own dock so very convenient for the motoscafo {water taxi} to deliver you right to the front door. Beware that the motoscafo are very expensive; $65 euro from the train station and 95 euro to the airport, but a special treat arriving in style!
The hotel staff is very helpful and friendly. The breakfast is served in a lovely room on the main floor and is complete with bacon and eggs along with cereals, juices, cheese and fruit.
The hotel has a lovely covered terrace on the top floor for boat and people watching along the canal. Our room had a balcony and it made the already beautifully decorated and comfortable room that much more special. The hotel is immaculate and the service first rate. We did not have dinner here with so many wonderful restaurants near by. One that I highly recommend is one that many contributors have already recommended and that is Trattoria della Rivetta, just a 6 or 7 minute walk from the hotel. It is a favorite of the gondoliers and it's no surprise as the food is delicious and the staff very friendly. Another restaurant that I often patronize in Venice is MADONNA, on the other side of the Rialto Bridge, down the second calle "alley" on the left. Very good seafood, friendly waiters. We also visited the Peggy Guggenheim Collezione in Dorsoduro, a short walk from the Accademia Bridge with a wonderful collection of modern art; including Picasso, Jackson Pollack, Dali, Calder, Henry Moore and many others. The people of Venice know that their #1 industry is tourism and treat visitors very kindly, especially if one makes the simple effort with buon giorno and grazia!
