We were drawn to this hotel (like everyone else seems to have been) by its quiet location and unique character, having seen the reviews posted here. While there certainly is some character in the hotel's decor and furnishings and the hotel is somewhat removed from the busy tourist areas, the hotel seemed overpriced considering the lack of attention details and the hotel's service, which left much to be desired. We arrived at the hotel in the late evening and there seemed to be only one person working at the hotel. We had several heavy pieces of luggage and were looking forward to some assistance with them, but instead we were given curt instructions as to how to find our room, which was located at the top of a 3 story staircase at the end of a maze of hallways and several doorways. What kind of 4-star hotel sends its guests up 3 flights of stairs with their baggage and offers no assistance. The room was quite small and disappointing as well, although the bathroom seemed to have been done over recently and was satisfactory. We enquired about switching rooms to one that was located in a more accessible part of the hotel, and were told to try back in the morning. In the morning, we were told to try back in the afternoon. In the afternoon, we were told we could have a different room for an additional 100 euros per night.
The next night, we returned to the hotel after an evening stroll and the front door was locked. It took a few minutes of knocking and ringing the doorbell until the front desk employee came out of the back room and unlocked the door. Strangely, he didn't bother to open the door for us - he just unlocked it and then scurried back behind the desk. The next evening, we required some assistance in our room, and we were told to try back in the morning because the only person working in the hotel said he couldn't leave the front desk to help us.
From the reviews below, it seems that there are hotel rooms in the basement of the hotel with no real windows, and there are various wings that have been added on to the hotel so they can make an extra buck. In all likelihood, the rooms in the main part of the hotel are probably nicers and more spacious, but good luck getting them. I would think they shouldn't be charging the same rates for subterranean rooms or rooms in the attic of the back stairwell, but the front desk employee insisted there's no difference between any of their rooms.
The ownership/management of this hotel appear to be masters of capitalism, but have no idea of what it means to service their clientele. They've managed to extend their hotel and add rooms in every possible direction at the expense of the service that hotel guests should be receiving. How many more subterranean rooms or rear wings will they add on before hiring some additional help, so that there might be service available other than a the front desk? How many more floors can they add on without providing their guest with an elevator or a bellhop?
This hotel is uniquely appointed and is in a charming location, but don't expect any 4-star service.
