It's not easy to find a decent, centrally-located hotel in Basel at a reasonable price, with an ample helping of individual style to boot, and that's exactly what the Drachen is/was.

Sadly, the reception staff confirmed that the hotel is to close by the end of 2006, as a developer has acquired the whole site, including the surrounding shops and the hotel itself, and will not be continuing to run the hotel.

I have never seen such a large flat-screen TV in a hotel room, and the hand-painted artwork on the walls was impressive. The minibar was well stocked, and there was a basket full of fruit and chocolate bars (the latter for which you had to pay of course!) on the desk.

It is a huge shame this place is closing. It is not on the most fashionable street, but a 5 minute walk gets you to the central hub.
